TSNTyndale Study Notes:

22:1-21 Paul’s premier defense of his life and faith before his own people in Jerusalem illustrates his flexibility as a missionary, just as his speech to the Greek philosophers in Athens had done (17:22-31; see 1 Cor 9:20-23). Paul begins by recognizing his kinship with his people, explaining his Jewish background and training under the noted rabbi Gamaliel the Elder and describing his zealous desire to honor God in everything, which they shared (Acts 22:1-3). Paul then describes his persecution of Christians (22:4-5), the revelation of Jesus to him on the way to Damascus (22:6-10), and his conversion (22:11-16). Paul ends his speech by describing his conversation with the Lord in the Temple. The Lord had predicted the Jews’ rejection of the message and had sent Paul to the Gentiles (22:17-21).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ὃς ταύτην τὴν Ὁδὸν ἐδίωξα ἄχρι θανάτου

who this ¬the Way ˱I˲_persecuted until death

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of death, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: “who persecuted this Way to the point of killing those who belonged to it”

Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

ὃς & ἐδίωξα

who & ˱I˲_persecuted

Paul is using the pronoun who to refer to himself. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. It may be helpful to begin a new sentence here. Alternate translation: “I persecuted”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

ταύτην τὴν Ὁδὸν

this ¬the Way

Here, this Way represents the people who belonged to the group called the Way. Alternate translation: “I persecuted the people who belonged to the group called the Way”

Note 4 topic: translate-names

ταύτην τὴν Ὁδὸν

this ¬the Way

As the General Notes to chapter 9 explain, the Way was one of the first names that people used to describe the community of believers in Jesus. If your language has a word for “way” or “path” that you can use as a name, it would be appropriate to use it in your translation. See what you did in 9:2.
