TSNTyndale Study Notes:

2:14-36 This is the first of about thirty speeches in Acts and one of the most important, standing as it does at the very inception of the church. It is a typical example of the preaching of the apostles, who proclaimed (1) that the Old Testament promises had been fulfilled in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who is the promised Messiah; (2) that the apostles themselves were eyewitnesses of Jesus’ entire public ministry and were his chosen representatives; (3) that people are called to repent of their sins and have faith in God through Christ; and (4) that salvation and the presence of the Holy Spirit are promised to those who respond affirmatively to this message of Good News. This basic message is echoed in the sermons of chs 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, and 13. The same themes characterized Paul’s preaching (see 1 Cor 15:3-9). This message was repeatedly preached to both Jews and Gentiles throughout the Mediterranean world; all people are summoned to repent of their sins and turn to God through faith in Jesus Christ.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

ἐγνώρισάς μοι ὁδοὺς ζωῆς; πληρώσεις με εὐφροσύνης μετὰ τοῦ προσώπου σου

˱you˲_made_known ˱to˲_me /the/_ways ˱of˲_life ˱you˲_/will_be/_filling me ˱with˲_gladness with the presence ˱of˲_you

You may have decided to turn Peter’s quotation of David into an indirect quotation in order to avoid having a second-level quotation. If so, it may be helpful to add some introductory material here. Alternate translation: “The Messiah said that God had made known to him the paths of life and that God would fill him with gladness with his face”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / youformal

ἐγνώρισάς & πληρώσεις & σου

˱you˲_made_known & ˱you˲_/will_be/_filling & ˱of˲_you

The words you and your are singular and they refer to God. See what you decided to do in the similar case in 1:24.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐγνώρισάς μοι ὁδοὺς ζωῆς

˱you˲_made_known ˱to˲_me /the/_ways ˱of˲_life

The Messiah speaks of life as if it consisted of paths that a person walked along. Those represent the various pursuits and adventures that people have in life. The word known refers to experiential knowledge. Alternate translation: “You enabled me to experience the adventures of life once again”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

πληρώσεις με εὐφροσύνης

˱you˲_/will_be/_filling me ˱with˲_gladness

The Messiah speaks as if he were a container that God could fill with gladness. Alternate translation: “you will give me great gladness”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

μετὰ τοῦ προσώπου σου

with the presence ˱of˲_you

Here, the word face represents the presence of a person. Alternate translation: “by your presence”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / quotemarks

μετὰ τοῦ προσώπου σου

with the presence ˱of˲_you

This is the end of Peter’s quotation of David. If you chose to mark David’s words as a second-level quotation, in your translation you can indicate this ending with a closing second-level quotation mark or whatever other punctuation or convention your language uses.
