\ip Ce livre a pour titre le nom d’une femme, Esther (qui veut dire étoile), héroïne grâce à laquelle les Juifs en exil échappent à une extermination préméditée à Babylone. L’histoire se passe sous la domination des Perses, dans un vaste territoire qui s’étendait de l’Inde à l’Éthiopie sur cent vingt-sept provinces. Le cadre de l’action est bien défini: l’histoire se déroule pendant le règne du roi Assuérus, ou, selon l’histoire antique, le roi Xerxès 1\ord er\ord* (486-465). Le lieu est Suse, ancienne capitale d’Élam, choisie comme ville de résidence par Darius 1\ord er\ord*, père de Xerxès. Dans l’histoire biblique, les événements racontés s’insèrent entre l’époque du premier retour à Jérusalem conduit par Zorobabel et Josué (Esd 1–6 à l’exception de 4:6-23), sous le règne de Cyrus (538-530), et celle de Néhémie, qui exerça son activité sous le successeur de Xerxès, Artaxerxès 1\ord er\ord* (465-424). C’est un récit pathétique: à travers les péripéties vécues par les deux héros Esther et Mardochée, c’est le sort même de tout un peuple qui se joue. 
\ip La reine Vasthi fut disgraciée après sa désobéissance publique à son époux ivre, le roi Assuérus (1). Une Juive, fille de l’oncle de Mardochée, fut choisie d’entre plusieurs «jeunes filles vierges et belles de figure» comme nouvelle reine. Mardochée déjoua entre-temps un attentat contre le roi (2). 
\ip Haman, favori du roi, Amalécite nourrissant des rancunes à l’égard de la race juive, usa d’un subterfuge pour que le roi signe contre les Juifs un édit relatif à leur extermination (3); ce fut la consternation et le jeûne parmi les Juifs (4). Que faire concrètement? 
\ip Dans les coulisses du pouvoir, Mardochée incita Esther à entreprendre des démarches auprès du roi. Haman chercha alors à faire périr Mardochée (5). Providentiellement le roi décida de récompenser le dénonciateur de l’attentat contre lui: c’est Mardochée qui reçut des honneurs royaux au détriment de Haman, humilié. 
\ip Dénoncé par la reine Esther, Haman fut mis à mort (7). Un édit en faveur des Juifs fut signé par le roi (8), les appelant à se défendre et à se venger de leurs ennemis. Une fête perpétuelle, celle des Purim, immortalise cette histoire (9), et le Juif Mardochée, «le premier après le roi Assuérus», devient une sorte de héros national à l’étranger (10). 
\ip Le livre d’Esther met en valeur l’importance de la providence dans la vie d’un individu et d’une nation. Il y a aussi le nationalisme et le désir de légitime défense ou de vengeance des Juifs menacés d’extermination. Le racisme, le tribalisme ou ethno-fascisme et d’autres rejets entraînent en général des réactions presque identiques à celles de ce livre. Bref, la haine appelle la haine et la violence conduit à la violence.
