Song (Psalm) 105

Note: This is still a very early look into the unfinished text of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check the text in advance before using in public. Some things (like capitalisation of ‘him’ referring to Jesus or ‘father’ referring to God) in the RV haven’t been decided yet so we’re still testing both ways.

Note: The Readers’ Version on the left is a translation into contemporary English aimed at the person on the street who hasn’t necessarily been brought up with exposure to Biblical jargon and/or 500-year old English. It’s designed to be used alongside the Literal Version on the right which gives the English reader a window into what’s actually written in the original languages. (See the introduction for more details—we recommend that you read the introduction first if you’re wanting to fully understand the Literal Version.) By comparing the left and right columns, you should be able to easily get the message of the text, while at the same time keeping an eye on what it was actually translated from.

Note that greyed words in the RV are words that the translators consider were most probably in the mind of the writer, but as none of us can double-check with the original speakers or writers, the reader is free to disagree. They are clearly marked because we’ve tried to be as honest and transparent as possible.

The lighter coloured words in the LV are words which aren’t needed in the grammar of the original languages but are required or implied in English. You can read the Key to learn more about them. The underlines joining words in the LV show when one original language word needs to be translated into two or more English words. (Just hide them with the button if you don’t need that information and find it distracting.) Also, the majority of sentences in the LV don’t have the words put into a sensible English order yet. (This should be completed by the end of 2023.)

105:1 Yahweh’s faithfulness

God and His People; God’s Faithfulness to Israel

(1 Chr. 16:8-22)

105 Give thanks to Yahweh. ≈Ask him when you need help.

Tell every people group ≈about what he’s done.

2 Sing to him. Sing praises to him.

Tell about his wonderful >miracles.

3 Boast about his sinless ≈reputation.

Let the hearts of those who ≈follow Yahweh be glad.

4 Get your help from Yahweh and his strength.

≈Always be ≈requesting his attention.

5 Remember the incredible things that he’s done—

≈his miracles and the judgements that he’s made

6 you offspring of his servant Abraham,

≈you descendants of Yaakov (Jacob), his chosen one.

7 He is Yahweh, our God.

His judgements are felt throughout the entire world.

8 He ^never forgets his agreement with us

≈Any promise he made will endure for a thousand generations.

9 ≈like the one he made with Abraham,[ref]

and his oath to Yitsak (Isaac).[ref]

10 ≈Later, he confirmed it again to Yaakov (Jacob),[ref]

and to Yisrael as an agreement ≈with no expiry date,

11 saying, “I’ll give you all the Canaan ≈region,

as your share of your inheritance.”

12 That was when they were few in number

so few, and were strangers to @the area.

13 They wandered from country to country

and from one kingdom to another.

14 He didn’t allow ≈others to oppress them.

He even scolded kings on their account.[ref]

15 He told them not to touch his chosen leaders,

and not to harm his prophets.

16 He called for a famine in that land[ref]

≈all food supply chains were broken.

17 He sent a man on ahead of them,[ref]

when Yosef (Joseph) was sold as a slave.

18 His feet were ≈shackled together.[ref]

≈His neck was placed in an iron collar

19 until ?@Yahweh’s[fn] ≈order came.

Yahweh’s ?≈promise[fn] tested @Yosef.

20 Then the king sent servants to release him.[ref]

≈The people’s ruler set him free.

21 He made him the master of his household,[ref]

and the ruler over all his possessions

22 to instruct his officials at his pleasure,

and to teach wisdom to his elders.

23 Then Yisrael went to Egypt (Heb. Mitsrayim),[ref]

yes, Yaakov (Jacob) lived for a time in the land of Ham.

24 Then Yahweh made his people ≈have large families,

and ≡made them much more powerful than their enemies.

25 He ≈caused them to hate his people

≈to deal craftily with his servants.

26 He sent his servant Mosheh (Moses),[ref]

and Aharon (Aaron) who he’d chosen

so they would deal with it.

27 They demonstrated signs @from Yahweh while with @the Egyptians,

≈and miracles in the land of Ham.

28 He sent darkness and the place ≈went dark.[ref]

They ≈couldn’t argue against his commands.[fn]

29 He turned their water into blood,[ref]

and their fish died.

30 Their land swarmed with frogs,[ref]

even in the ≈palace bedrooms.

31 He spoke and a swarm of flies came.[ref]

Gnats spread throughout ≈the entire country.

32 He ≈replaced the rain with hail,[ref]

with fire flaming on their land.[fn]

33 He ≈destroyed their grapevines and fig trees—

shattering ≈all the other trees.

34 He spoke out and the locusts came[ref]

and grasshoppers ≈that simply couldn’t be counted,

35 and devoured all of the vegetation in their region—

they ate up all the ≈produce from the ≈soil.

36 He ≈killed every ≈eldest male in their land[ref]

the ≈star products of their strength. STUD PRODUCTS???

37 He brought @his people out ≈carrying gold and silver,[ref]

No one among the tribes stumbled as they left.

38 Egypt (Heb. Mitsrayim) was glad when they departed,

because ≈they’d come to very much dread them.

39 He spread out a cloud for a covering[ref]

and a fire to give light at night.

40 #They asked, and he sent quail,[ref]

≈and they filled up on bread from the heavens.

41 He ≈split a rock and #water gushed out[ref]

#it flowed in the wilderness like a river,

42 because he remembered his holy promise to his servant Abraham.

43 His people ≈were happy as he brought them out of Egypt.

His chosen ones were shouting with joy.

44 He gave them the foreigners’ lands,[ref]

and they took possession of the peoples’ goods,

45 so that they might follow his instructions

and obey his rules.

Praise Yah.
