2 “Futility of futilities,” [3] says Kohelet, [2] all is futility.” [1] |

3 מַה־יִּתְר֖וֹן [2] Tip'cha לָֽאָדָ֑ם [1] Etnachta שֶֽׁיַּעֲמֹ֖ל [2] Tip'cha תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ [1] Silluq |
3 What is the profit [2] to man; [1] which he toils [2] under the sun? [1] |

4 דּ֤וֹר הֹלֵךְ֙ [3] Pashta וְד֣וֹר בָּ֔א [2] Zaqef לְעוֹלָ֥ם עֹמָֽדֶת׃ [1] Silluq |
4 A generation goes [3] and a generation comes, [2] remains forever. [1] |

5 וְזָרַ֥ח הַשֶּׁ֖מֶשׁ [2] Tip'cha וּבָ֣א הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ [1] Etnachta זוֹרֵ֥חַֽ ה֖וּא [2] Tip'cha שָֽׁם׃ [1] Silluq |
5 And the sun rises [2] and the sun sets; [1] it (again) rises [2] there. [1] |

6 Going [3] to the south, [2] to the north; [1] goes the wind, [2] the wind returns. [1] |

7 כׇּל־הַנְּחָלִים֙ [3] Pashta הֹלְכִ֣ים אֶל־הַיָּ֔ם [2] Zaqef אֵינֶ֣נּוּ מָלֵ֑א [1] Etnachta שֶׁ֤הַנְּחָלִים֙ [3] Pashta הֹֽלְכִ֔ים [2] Zaqef הֵ֥ם שָׁבִ֖ים [2] Tip'cha לָלָֽכֶת׃ [1] Silluq |
7 All the rivers [3] flow into the sea, [2] is not full; [1] (from) where the rivers [3] flow, [2] they return [2] to (again) flow. [1] |

8 All things are full of weariness [2] that no one can [2] express; [1] with seeing, [2] with hearing. [1] |

10 יֵ֥שׁ דָּבָ֛ר [3] Tevir שֶׁיֹּאמַ֥ר רְאֵה־זֶ֖ה [2] Tip'cha חָדָ֣שׁ ה֑וּא [1] Etnachta הָיָ֣ה לְעֹֽלָמִ֔ים [2] Zaqef מִלְּפָנֵֽנוּ׃ [1] Silluq |
10 Is there anything [3] of which one can say, “Behold this, [2] it is new?” [1] it has been in the ages [2] before us. [1] |

11 There is no remembrance [2] of the former things; [1] which will be [3] remembrance, [2] afterwards. [1] ¶ |

12 I, Kohelet, [3] I was king [3] over Israel [2] in Jerusalem. [1] |

13 וְנָתַ֣תִּי אֶת־לִבִּ֗י [3] Revi'i לִדְר֤וֹשׁ וְלָתוּר֙ [3] Pashta בַּֽחׇכְמָ֔ה [2] Zaqef כׇּל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר נַעֲשָׂ֖ה [2] Tip'cha תַּ֣חַת הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם [1] Etnachta עִנְיַ֣ן רָ֗ע [3] Revi'i לִבְנֵ֥י הָאָדָ֖ם [2] Tip'cha |
13 And I applied my heart [3] to seek and to search out [3] by wisdom [2] all that is done [2] under the heavens; [1] is a burdensome task [3] to the sons of men [2] |

14 I have seen [3 3] all the works [2] under the sun; [1] is futility, [2] and chasing after the wind. [1] |

15 מְעֻוָּ֖ת [2] Tip'cha לֹא־יוּכַ֣ל לִתְקֹ֑ן [1] Etnachta לֹא־יוּכַ֥ל לְהִמָּנֽוֹת׃ [1] Silluq |
15 That which is crooked, [2] it can’t be made straight; [1] it can’t be counted. [1] |

16 דִּבַּ֨רְתִּי אֲנִ֤י עִם־לִבִּי֙ [3] Pashta לֵאמֹ֔ר [2] Zaqef הִנֵּ֨ה הִגְדַּ֤לְתִּי וְהוֹסַ֙פְתִּי֙ [3 3] Pashta חׇכְמָ֔ה [2] Zaqef כׇּל־אֲשֶׁר־הָיָ֥ה לְפָנַ֖י [2] Tip'cha עַל־יְרוּשָׁלָ֑͏ִם [1] Etnachta רָאָ֥ה הַרְבֵּ֖ה [2] Tip'cha חׇכְמָ֥ה וָדָֽעַת׃ [1] Silluq |
16 I, I spoke with my heart [3] saying, [2] behold, I have become great and I have increased [3 3] wisdom [2] all who were before me [2] over Jerusalem; [1] it has experienced much [2] wisdom and knowledge.” [1] |

17 וָאֶתְּנָ֤ה לִבִּי֙ [3] Pashta לָדַ֣עַת חׇכְמָ֔ה [2] Zaqef וְשִׂכְל֑וּת [1] Etnachta שֶׁגַּם־זֶ֥ה ה֖וּא [2] Tip'cha רַעְי֥וֹן רֽוּחַ׃ [1] Silluq |
17 And I applied my heart [3] to know wisdom, [2] and folly; [1] that this too [2] was a chasing after wind. [1] |

18 כִּ֛י [3] Tevir בְּרֹ֥ב חׇכְמָ֖ה [2] Tip'cha רׇב־כָּ֑עַס [1] Etnachta יוֹסִ֥יף מַכְאֽוֹב׃ [1] Silluq |
18 For [3] in much wisdom [2] is much grief; [1] he will increase sorrow. [1] |
