1 וַיֵּ֥רַע אֶל־יוֹנָ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
רָעָ֣ה גְדוֹלָ֑ה [1] Etnachta
 
וַיִּ֖חַר [2] Tip'cha
לֽוֹ׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 2 1 But it was displeasing to Jonah [2]
exceedingly; [1]
 
and it burned [2]
to him. [1]
2 וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֨ל אֶל־יְהֹוָ֜ה [4] Geresh
וַיֹּאמַ֗ר [3] Revi'i
 
אָנָּ֤ה יְהֹוָה֙ [3] Pashta
הֲלוֹא־זֶ֣ה דְבָרִ֗י [3] Revi'i
עַד־הֱיוֹתִי֙ [3] Pashta
עַל־אַדְמָתִ֔י [2] Zaqef
 
עַל־כֵּ֥ן קִדַּ֖מְתִּי [2] Tip'cha
לִבְרֹ֣חַ תַּרְשִׁ֑ישָׁה [1] Etnachta
 
כִּ֣י יָדַ֗עְתִּי [3] Revi'i
כִּ֤י אַתָּה֙ [3] Pashta
אֵֽל־חַנּ֣וּן וְרַח֔וּם [2] Zaqef
 
אֶ֤רֶךְ אַפַּ֙יִם֙ [3 3] Pashta
וְרַב־חֶ֔סֶד [2] Zaqef
 
וְנִחָ֖ם [2] Tip'cha
עַל־הָרָעָֽה׃ [1] Silluq

“Please LORD, [3]
wasn’t this what I said [3]
when I was still [3]
in my own country? [2]
 
Therefore I hurried [2]
to flee to Tarshish; [1]
 
for I knew [3]
that you [3]
are a gracious and compassionate God, [2]
 
slow to anger [3 3]
and abundant in lovingkindness, [2]
 
and who relents [2]
of doing harm. [1]
3 וְעַתָּ֣ה יְהֹוָ֔ה [2] Zaqef
קַח־נָ֥א אֶת־נַפְשִׁ֖י [2] Tip'cha
מִמֶּ֑נִּי [1] Etnachta
 
כִּ֛י [3] Tevir
ט֥וֹב מוֹתִ֖י [2] Tip'cha
מֵחַיָּֽי׃ [1] Silluq

take I beg you, my life [2]
from me; [1]
 
for [3]
it is better for me to die [2]
than to live.” [1]
4 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהֹוָ֔ה [2] Zaqef
הַהֵיטֵ֖ב [2] Tip'cha
חָ֥רָה לָֽךְ׃ [1] Silluq
2 2 4 And the LORD said, [2]
“Is it right [2]
for you to be angry?” [1]
5 וַיֵּצֵ֤א יוֹנָה֙ [3] Pashta
מִן־הָעִ֔יר [2] Zaqef
 
וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב [2] Tip'cha
מִקֶּ֣דֶם לָעִ֑יר [1] Etnachta
 
וַיַּ֩עַשׂ֩ ל֨וֹ שָׁ֜ם [4] Geresh
סֻכָּ֗ה [3] Revi'i
 
וַיֵּ֤שֶׁב תַּחְתֶּ֙יהָ֙ [3 3] Pashta
בַּצֵּ֔ל [2] Zaqef
 
עַ֚ד [3] Yetiv
אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִרְאֶ֔ה [2] Zaqef
 
מַה־יִּהְיֶ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
בָּעִֽיר׃ [1] Silluq

from the city, [2]
 
and he sat [2]
on the east side of the city; [1]
 
and he made for himself there [4]
a shelter, [3]
 
and he sat under it [3 3]
in the shade, [2]
 
until [3]
he might see [2]
 
what would happen [2]
in the city. [1]
6 וַיְמַ֣ן יְהֹוָֽה־אֱ֠לֹהִ֠ים [4 4] TelishaG

וַיַּ֣עַל ׀ [4] Legarmeh
מֵעַ֣ל לְיוֹנָ֗ה [3] Revi'i
 
לִֽהְי֥וֹת צֵל֙ [3] Pashta
עַל־רֹאשׁ֔וֹ [2] Zaqef
 
לְהַצִּ֥יל ל֖וֹ [2] Tip'cha
מֵרָֽעָת֑וֹ [1] Etnachta
 
וַיִּשְׂמַ֥ח יוֹנָ֛ה [3] Tevir
עַל־הַקִּֽיקָי֖וֹן [2] Tip'cha
שִׂמְחָ֥ה גְדוֹלָֽה׃ [1] Silluq

a vine, [4]
and it went up [4]
over Jonah, [3]
 
to be shade [3]
over his head, [2]
 
to deliver him [2]
from his distress; [1]
 
and Jonah rejoiced [3]
over the vine [2]
a great joy. [1]
7 וַיְמַ֤ן הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ [3] Pashta
תּוֹלַ֔עַת [2] Zaqef
 
בַּעֲל֥וֹת הַשַּׁ֖חַר [2] Tip'cha
לַֽמׇּחֳרָ֑ת [1] Etnachta
 
וַתַּ֥ךְ אֶת־הַקִּֽיקָי֖וֹן [2] Tip'cha
וַיִּיבָֽשׁ׃ [1] Silluq

a worm [2]
 
at dawn [2]
the next day; [1]
 
and it attacked the vine [2]
and it withered. [1]
8 וַיְהִ֣י ׀ [4] Legarmeh
כִּזְרֹ֣חַ הַשֶּׁ֗מֶשׁ [3] Revi'i
 
וַיְמַ֨ן אֱלֹהִ֜ים [4] Geresh
ר֤וּחַ קָדִים֙ [3] Pashta
חֲרִישִׁ֔ית [2] Zaqef
 
וַתַּ֥ךְ הַשֶּׁ֛מֶשׁ [3] Tevir
עַל־רֹ֥אשׁ יוֹנָ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
וַיִּתְעַלָּ֑ף [1] Etnachta
 
וַיִּשְׁאַ֤ל אֶת־נַפְשׁוֹ֙ [3] Pashta
לָמ֔וּת [2] Zaqef
 
וַיֹּ֕אמֶר [2] ZaqefG
ט֥וֹב מוֹתִ֖י [2] Tip'cha
מֵחַיָּֽי׃ [1] Silluq

the sun arose, [3]
 
God appointed [4]
an east wind, [3]
a hot one, [2]
 
and the sun beat down [3]
on the head of Jonah [2]
and he became faint; [1]
 
and he requested of his life [3]
to die, [2]
 
and he said, [2]
“It is better for me to die [2]
than to live.” [1]
9 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֱלֹהִים֙ [3] Pashta
אֶל־יוֹנָ֔ה [2] Zaqef
 
הַהֵיטֵ֥ב חָרָֽה־לְךָ֖ [2] Tip'cha
עַל־הַקִּֽיקָי֑וֹן [1] Etnachta
 
וַיֹּ֕אמֶר [2] ZaqefG
הֵיטֵ֥ב חָֽרָה־לִ֖י [2] Tip'cha
עַד־מָֽוֶת׃ [1] Silluq

to Jonah, [2]
 
“Is it right for you to be angry [2]
about the vine?” [1]
 
And he said, [2]
“I am right to be angry, [2]
even to death.” [1]
10 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהֹוָ֔ה [2] Zaqef
 
אַתָּ֥ה חַ֙סְתָּ֙ [3 3] Pashta
עַל־הַקִּ֣יקָי֔וֹן [2] Zaqef
 
אֲשֶׁ֛ר [3] Tevir
לֹא־עָמַ֥לְתָּ בּ֖וֹ [2] Tip'cha
וְלֹ֣א גִדַּלְתּ֑וֹ [1] Etnachta
 
שֶׁבִּן־לַ֥יְלָה הָיָ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
וּבִן־לַ֥יְלָה אָבָֽד׃ [1] Silluq

“You, you had compassion [3 3]
on the vine, [2]
 
for which [3]
you have not labored, [2]
neither made it grow; [1]
 
which came up in a night [2]
and perished in a night. [1]
11 וַֽאֲנִי֙ [3] Pashta
לֹ֣א אָח֔וּס [2] Zaqef
 
עַל־נִינְוֵ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
הָעִ֣יר הַגְּדוֹלָ֑ה [1] Etnachta
 
אֲשֶׁ֣ר יֶשׁ־בָּ֡הּ [4] Pazer
הַרְבֵּה֩ מִֽשְׁתֵּים־עֶשְׂרֵ֨ה רִבּ֜וֹ [4] Geresh
אָדָ֗ם [3] Revi'i
 
אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־יָדַע֙ [3] Pashta
בֵּין־יְמִינ֣וֹ לִשְׂמֹאל֔וֹ [2] Zaqef
 
וּבְהֵמָ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
רַבָּֽה׃ [1] Silluq

Should I not have compassion [2]
 
on Nineveh [2]
the great city; [1]
 
in which there are [4]
more than two and ten times ten thousand [4]
persons, [3]
 
who can’t discern [3]
between their right hand and their left hand, [2]
 
and livestock [2]
many?” [1]
