1 ... years old [2] was Saul when he became king; [1] he reigned [2] over Israel. [1] |

2 וַיִּבְחַר־ל֨וֹ שָׁא֜וּל [4] Geresh שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת אֲלָפִים֮ [3] Zarqa מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל֒ [2] Segol אַלְפַּ֗יִם [3] Revi'i וּבְהַ֣ר בֵּֽית־אֵ֔ל [2] Zaqef הָיוּ֙ [3] Pashta עִם־י֣וֹנָתָ֔ן [2] Zaqef בִּנְיָמִ֑ין [1] Etnachta שִׁלַּ֖ח [2] Tip'cha אִ֥ישׁ לְאֹהָלָֽיו׃ [1] Silluq |
2 And Saul chose for himself [4] three thousand [3] from Israel, [2] two thousand [3] and in the hill country of Bethel, [2] they were [3] with Jonathan [2] of Benjamin; [1] he sent away [2] each man to his tent. [1] |

3 וַיַּ֣ךְ יוֹנָתָ֗ן [3] Revi'i אֵ֣ת נְצִ֤יב פְּלִשְׁתִּים֙ [3] Pashta אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּגֶ֔בַע [2] Zaqef פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים [1] Etnachta לֵאמֹ֔ר [2] Zaqef הָעִבְרִֽים׃ [1] Silluq |
3 And Jonathan attacked [3] the garrison of the Philistines [3] which was at Geba, [2] the Philistines; [1] saying, [2] the Hebrews!” [1] |

4 וְכׇל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֞ל [4] Gershayim שָׁמְע֣וּ לֵאמֹ֗ר [3] Revi'i אֶת־נְצִ֣יב פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים [2] Zaqef בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים [1] Etnachta אַחֲרֵ֥י שָׁא֖וּל [2] Tip'cha הַגִּלְגָּֽל׃ [1] Silluq |
4 And all Israel, [4] they heard saying, [3] the garrison of the Philistines,” [2] to the Philistines.” [1] after Saul [2] to Gilgal. [1] |

5 וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֞ים [4] Gershayim נֶאֶסְפ֣וּ ׀ [4] Legarmeh לְהִלָּחֵ֣ם עִם־יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל [3] Revi'i וְשֵׁ֤שֶׁת אֲלָפִים֙ [3] Pashta פָּרָשִׁ֔ים [2] Zaqef אֲשֶׁ֥ר עַל־שְׂפַֽת־הַיָּ֖ם [2] Tip'cha לָרֹ֑ב [1] Etnachta וַיַּחֲנ֣וּ בְמִכְמָ֔שׂ [2] Zaqef בֵּ֥ית אָֽוֶן׃ [1] Silluq |
5 And the Philistines, [4] they gathered [4] to fight with Israel, [3] and six thousand [3] horsemen, [2] which is on the seashore [2] for multitude; [1] and they encamped at Michmash, [2] of Beth Aven. [1] |

6 וְאִ֨ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל רָאוּ֙ [3] Pashta כִּ֣י צַר־ל֔וֹ [2] Zaqef הָעָ֑ם [1] Etnachta בַּמְּעָר֤וֹת וּבַֽחֲוָחִים֙ [3] Pashta וּבַסְּלָעִ֔ים [2] Zaqef וּבַבֹּרֽוֹת׃ [1] Silluq |
6 And when everyone of Israel saw [3] that they were in distress, [2] the people; [1] in caves and in thickets [3] and in cliffs, [2] and in cisterns. [1] |

7 וְעִבְרִ֗ים [3] Revi'i עָֽבְרוּ֙ [3] Pashta אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן [2] Zaqef וְגִלְעָ֑ד [1] Etnachta עוֹדֶ֣נּוּ בַגִּלְגָּ֔ל [2] Zaqef חָֽרְד֥וּ אַחֲרָֽיו׃ [1] Silluq |
7 Now some of the Hebrews, [3] they passed over [3] the Jordan [2] and Gilead; [1] he was still in Gilgal, [2] they followed after him trembling. [1] |

8 *וייחל **וַיּ֣וֹחֶל ׀ [4] Legarmeh שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִ֗ים [3] Revi'i אֲשֶׁ֣ר שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל [2] Zaqef הַגִּלְגָּ֑ל [1] Etnachta מֵעָלָֽיו׃ [1] Silluq |
8 And he waited [4] seven days [3] by Samuel, [2] to Gilgal; [1] from him. [1] |

9 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שָׁא֔וּל [2] Zaqef הַגִּ֣שׁוּ אֵלַ֔י [2] Zaqef הָֽעֹלָ֖ה [2] Tip'cha וְהַשְּׁלָמִ֑ים [1] Etnachta הָעֹלָֽה׃ [1] Silluq |
9 And Saul said, [2] “Bring here to me [2] the burnt offering [2] and the peace offerings.” [1] the burnt offering. [1] |

10 וַיְהִ֗י [3] Revi'i כְּכַלֹּתוֹ֙ [3] Pashta לְהַעֲל֣וֹת הָעֹלָ֔ה [2] Zaqef בָּ֑א [1] Etnachta לִקְרָאת֖וֹ [2] Tip'cha לְבָרְכֽוֹ׃ [1] Silluq |
10 And it came to pass [3] just as he finished [3] offering up the burnt offering, [2] was coming; [1] to meet him, [2] to bless him. [1] |

11 וַיֹּ֥אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל [2] Tip'cha מֶ֣ה עָשִׂ֑יתָ [1] Etnachta כִּֽי־רָאִ֩יתִי֩ כִֽי־נָפַ֨ץ הָעָ֜ם [4] Geresh מֵעָלַ֗י [3] Revi'i לֹֽא־בָ֙אתָ֙ [3 3] Pashta לְמוֹעֵ֣ד הַיָּמִ֔ים [2] Zaqef נֶאֱסָפִ֥ים מִכְמָֽשׂ׃ [1] Silluq |
11 And Samuel said, [2] “What have you done?” [1] “Because I saw that the people were scattered [4] from me, [3] you hadn't come [3 3] in the appointed number of days, [2] were gathering at Michmash; [1] |

12 וָאֹמַ֗ר [3] Revi'i יֵרְד֨וּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֤ים אֵלַי֙ [3] Pashta הַגִּלְגָּ֔ל [2] Zaqef לֹ֣א חִלִּ֑יתִי [1] Etnachta וָאַעֲלֶ֖ה [2] Tip'cha הָעֹלָֽה׃ [1] Silluq ס |
12 then I said, [3] the Philistines will come down against me [3] at Gilgal, [2] I have not entreated.’ [1] and I offered up [2] the burnt offering.” [1] § |

13 וַיֹּ֧אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵ֛ל [3] Tevir אֶל־שָׁא֖וּל [2] Tip'cha נִסְכָּ֑לְתָּ [1] Etnachta יְהֹוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ [3 3] Pashta אֲשֶׁ֣ר צִוָּ֔ךְ [2] Zaqef הֵכִ֨ין יְהֹוָ֧ה אֶת־מַֽמְלַכְתְּךָ֛ [3] Tevir אֶל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל [2] Tip'cha עַד־עוֹלָֽם׃ [1] Silluq |
13 And Samuel said [3] to Saul, [2] “You have acted foolishly. [1] of the LORD your God [3 3] which he commanded you; [2] the LORD would have established your kingdom [3] in Israel [2] forever. [1] |

14 וְעַתָּ֖ה [2] Tip'cha מַמְלַכְתְּךָ֣ לֹֽא־תָק֑וּם [1] Etnachta אִ֣ישׁ כִּלְבָב֗וֹ [3] Revi'i עַל־עַמּ֔וֹ [2] Zaqef לֹ֣א שָׁמַ֔רְתָּ [2] Zaqef יְהֹוָֽה׃ [1] Silluq ס |
14 But now [2] your kingdom will not endure. [1] a man after his own heart, [3] over his people; [2] you have not kept [2] the LORD.” [1] ¶ |

15 וַיָּ֣קׇם שְׁמוּאֵ֗ל [3] Revi'i וַיַּ֛עַל [3] Tevir מִן־הַגִּלְגָּ֖ל [2] Tip'cha גִּבְעַ֣ת בִּנְיָמִ֑ן [1] Etnachta אֶת־הָעָם֙ [3] Pashta הַנִּמְצְאִ֣ים עִמּ֔וֹ [2] Zaqef אִֽישׁ׃ [1] Silluq |
15 And Samuel arose [3] and he went up [3] from Gilgal, [2] to Gibeah of Benjamin. [1] the people [3] who were present with him, [2] men. [1] |

16 וְשָׁא֞וּל [4] Gershayim וְיוֹנָתָ֣ן בְּנ֗וֹ [3] Revi'i הַנִּמְצָ֣א עִמָּ֔ם [2] Zaqef בְּגֶ֣בַע בִּנְיָמִ֑ן [1] Etnachta חָנ֥וּ בְמִכְמָֽשׂ׃ [1] Silluq |
16 And Saul [4] and Jonathan his son [3] who were present with them, [2] in Geba of Benjamin; [1] they encamped in Michmash. [1] |

17 וַיֵּצֵ֧א הַמַּשְׁחִ֛ית [3] Tevir מִמַּחֲנֵ֥ה פְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים [2] Tip'cha שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה רָאשִׁ֑ים [1] Etnachta אֶל־דֶּ֥רֶךְ עׇפְרָ֖ה [2] Tip'cha אֶל־אֶ֥רֶץ שׁוּעָֽל׃ [1] Silluq |
17 And the raiders came out [3] from the camp of the Philistines [2] in three companies; [1] in the direction of Ophrah, [2] to the land of Shual; [1] |

18 וְהָרֹ֤אשׁ אֶחָד֙ [3] Pashta יִפְנֶ֔ה [2] Zaqef בֵּ֣ית חֹר֑וֹן [1] Etnachta דֶּ֣רֶךְ הַגְּב֔וּל [2] Zaqef עַל־גֵּ֥י הַצְּבֹעִ֖ים [2] Tip'cha הַמִּדְבָּֽרָה׃ [1] Silluq ס |
18 and one company [3] it turned [2] of Beth Horon; [1] the direction of the border [2] over the valley of Zeboim [2] toward the wilderness. [1] § |

19 וְחָרָשׁ֙ [3] Pashta לֹ֣א יִמָּצֵ֔א [2] Zaqef אֶ֣רֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל [1] Etnachta יַעֲשׂ֣וּ הָעִבְרִ֔ים [2] Zaqef א֥וֹ חֲנִֽית׃ [1] Silluq |
19 Now a blacksmith [3] was not found [2] Eretz-Israel; [1] the Hebrews should make [2] or a spear”; [1] |

20 וַיֵּרְד֥וּ כׇל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל [2] Tip'cha הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים [1] Etnachta אִ֣ישׁ אֶת־מַחֲרַשְׁתּ֤וֹ וְאֶת־אֵתוֹ֙ [3] Pashta וְאֶת־קַרְדֻּמּ֔וֹ [2] Zaqef מַחֲרֵשָׁתֽוֹ׃ [1] Silluq |
20 but all the Israelites went down [2] to the Philistines, [1] each man his plowshare and his mattock [3] and his ax [2] his sickle. [1] |

21 וְֽהָיְתָ֞ה [4] Gershayim הַפְּצִ֣ירָה פִ֗ים [3] Revi'i וְלָ֣אֵתִ֔ים [2] Zaqef וּלְהַקַּרְדֻּמִּ֑ים [1] Etnachta הַדָּרְבָֽן׃ [1] Silluq |
21 And it was [4] the price, two thirds of a shekel [3] and for the mattocks, [2] and for axes; [1] the goads. [1] |

22 וְהָיָה֙ [3] Pashta בְּי֣וֹם מִלְחֶ֔מֶת [2] Zaqef חֶ֤רֶב וַֽחֲנִית֙ [3] Pashta בְּיַ֣ד כׇּל־הָעָ֔ם [2] Zaqef וְאֶת־יוֹנָתָ֑ן [1] Etnachta וּלְיוֹנָתָ֖ן [2] Tip'cha בְּנֽוֹ׃ [1] Silluq |
22 So it came to pass [3] in the day of battle, [2] a sword or a spear [3] in the hand of any of the people [2] and with Jonathan; [1] and Jonathan [2] his son. [1] |
