1 וַֽיְהִי֙ [3] Pashta
בָּעֵ֣ת הַהִ֔וא [2] Zaqef
 
וַיֵּ֥רֶד יְהוּדָ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
מֵאֵ֣ת אֶחָ֑יו [1] Etnachta
 
וַיֵּ֛ט [3] Tevir
עַד־אִ֥ישׁ עֲדֻלָּמִ֖י [2] Tip'cha
וּשְׁמ֥וֹ חִירָֽה׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 3 2 2 3 1 And it happened [3]
at that time, [2]
 
Judah went down [2]
from his brothers; [1]
 
and he visited [3]
an Adullamite man [2]
whose name was Hirah. [1]
2 וַיַּרְא־שָׁ֧ם יְהוּדָ֛ה [3] Tevir
בַּת־אִ֥ישׁ כְּנַעֲנִ֖י [2] Tip'cha
וּשְׁמ֣וֹ שׁ֑וּעַ [1] Etnachta
 
וַיִּקָּחֶ֖הָ [2] Tip'cha
וַיָּבֹ֥א אֵלֶֽיהָ׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 3 2 2 And there Judah saw [3]
a daughter of a Canaanite man [2]
whose name was Shua; [1]
 
and he took her [2]
and he went in to her. [1]
3 וַתַּ֖הַר [2] Tip'cha
וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֑ן [1] Etnachta
 
וַיִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ [2] Tip'cha
עֵֽר׃ [1] Silluq

and she bore a son; [1]
 
and he called his name [2]
Er. [1]
4 וַתַּ֥הַר ע֖וֹד [2] Tip'cha
וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֑ן [1] Etnachta
 
וַתִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ [2] Tip'cha
אוֹנָֽן׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 2 4 And she conceived again [2]
and she bore a son; [1]
 
and she called his name [2]
Onan. [1]
5 וַתֹּ֤סֶף עוֹד֙ [3] Pashta
וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֔ן [2] Zaqef
 
וַתִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ [2] Tip'cha
שֵׁלָ֑ה [1] Etnachta
 
וְהָיָ֥ה בִכְזִ֖יב [2] Tip'cha
בְּלִדְתָּ֥הּ אֹתֽוֹ׃ [1] Silluq

bore a son, [2]
 
and she called his name [2]
Shelah; [1]
 
and he was at Chezib [2]
when she bore him. [1]
6 וַיִּקַּ֧ח יְהוּדָ֛ה [3] Tevir
אִשָּׁ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
לְעֵ֣ר בְּכוֹר֑וֹ [1] Etnachta
 
וּשְׁמָ֖הּ [2] Tip'cha
תָּמָֽר׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 3 2 6 And Judah took [3]
a wife [2]
for Er his firstborn; [1]
 
and her name [2]
was Tamar. [1]
7 וַיְהִ֗י [3] Revi'i
עֵ֚ר [3] Yetiv
בְּכ֣וֹר יְהוּדָ֔ה [2] Zaqef
 
רַ֖ע [2] Tip'cha
בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהֹוָ֑ה [1] Etnachta
 
וַיְמִתֵ֖הוּ [2] Tip'cha
יְהֹוָֽה׃ [1] Silluq

the firstborn of Judah, [2]
 
evil [2]
in the LORD’s sight; [1]
 
so he put him to death, [2]
The LORD. [1]
8 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוּדָה֙ [3] Pashta
לְאוֹנָ֔ן [2] Zaqef
 
בֹּ֛א [3] Tevir
אֶל־אֵ֥שֶׁת אָחִ֖יךָ [2] Tip'cha
וְיַבֵּ֣ם אֹתָ֑הּ [1] Etnachta
 
וְהָקֵ֥ם זֶ֖רַע [2] Tip'cha
לְאָחִֽיךָ׃ [1] Silluq

to Onan, [2]
 
“Go in [3]
to the wife of your brother, [2]
and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her; [1]
 
and raise up offspring [2]
for your brother.” [1]
9 וַיֵּ֣דַע אוֹנָ֔ן [2] Zaqef
 
כִּ֛י [3] Tevir
לֹּ֥א ל֖וֹ [2] Tip'cha
יִהְיֶ֣ה הַזָּ֑רַע [1] Etnachta
 
וְהָיָ֞ה [4] Gershayim
אִם־בָּ֨א אֶל־אֵ֤שֶׁת אָחִיו֙ [3] Pashta
וְשִׁחֵ֣ת אַ֔רְצָה [2] Zaqef
 
לְבִלְתִּ֥י נְתׇן־זֶ֖רַע [2] Tip'cha
לְאָחִֽיו׃ [1] Silluq

that [3]
not to him [2]
would belong the offspring; [1]
 
so [4]
when he went in to the wife of his brother, [3]
he spilled it on the ground, [2]
 
lest he should give offspring [2]
to his brother. [1]
10 וַיֵּ֛רַע [3] Tevir
בְּעֵינֵ֥י יְהֹוָ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֑ה [1] Etnachta
 
וַיָּ֖מֶת [2] Tip'cha
גַּם־אֹתֽוֹ׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 3 2 10 And it was evil [3]
in the LORD’s sight, [2]
that which he had done; [1]
 
and he put to death [2]
him also. [1]
11 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוּדָה֩ לְתָמָ֨ר כַּלָּת֜וֹ [4] Geresh
שְׁבִ֧י אַלְמָנָ֣ה בֵית־אָבִ֗יךְ [3] Revi'i
 
עַד־יִגְדַּל֙ [3] Pashta
שֵׁלָ֣ה בְנִ֔י [2] Zaqef
 
כִּ֣י אָמַ֔ר [2] Zaqef
פֶּן־יָמ֥וּת גַּם־ה֖וּא [2] Tip'cha
כְּאֶחָ֑יו [1] Etnachta
 
וַתֵּ֣לֶךְ תָּמָ֔ר [2] Zaqef
וַתֵּ֖שֶׁב [2] Tip'cha
בֵּ֥ית אָבִֽיהָ׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 3 4 3 2 2 2 2 11 Then Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, [4]
“Remain a widow in your father’s house, [3]
 
until he has grown up, [3]
Shelah my son,” [2]
 
for he said, [2]
“Lest he die, he too, [2]
like his brothers.” [1]
 
And Tamar went [2]
and she lived [2]
in her father’s house. [1]
12 וַיִּרְבּוּ֙ [3] Pashta
הַיָּמִ֔ים [2] Zaqef
 
וַתָּ֖מׇת [2] Tip'cha
בַּת־שׁ֣וּעַ אֵֽשֶׁת־יְהוּדָ֑ה [1] Etnachta
 
וַיִּנָּ֣חֶם יְהוּדָ֗ה [3] Revi'i
 
וַיַּ֜עַל [4] Geresh
עַל־גֹּֽזְזֵ֤י צֹאנוֹ֙ [3] Pashta
 
ה֗וּא [3] Revi'i
וְחִירָ֛ה [3] Tevir
רֵעֵ֥הוּ הָעֲדֻלָּמִ֖י [2] Tip'cha
 
תִּמְנָֽתָה׃ [1] Silluq

the days, [2]
 
and she died, [2]
the daughter of Shua, the wife of Judah; [1]
 
and Judah was comforted, [3]
 
and he went up [4]
to his sheep shearers, [3]

and Hirah [3]
his friend the Adullamite, [2]
 
to Timnah. [1]
13 וַיֻּגַּ֥ד לְתָמָ֖ר [2] Tip'cha
לֵאמֹ֑ר [1] Etnachta
 
הִנֵּ֥ה חָמִ֛יךְ [3] Tevir
עֹלֶ֥ה תִמְנָ֖תָה [2] Tip'cha
לָגֹ֥ז צֹאנֽוֹ׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 2 3 13 And Tamar was told [2]
saying; [1]
 
“Behold, your father-in-law [3]
is going up to Timnah [2]
to shear his sheep.” [1]
14 וַתָּ֩סַר֩ בִּגְדֵ֨י אַלְמְנוּתָ֜הּ [4] Geresh
מֵֽעָלֶ֗יהָ [3] Revi'i
 
וַתְּכַ֤ס בַּצָּעִיף֙ [3] Pashta
וַתִּתְעַלָּ֔ף [2] Zaqef
 
וַתֵּ֙שֶׁב֙ [3 3] Pashta
בְּפֶ֣תַח עֵינַ֔יִם [2] Zaqef
 
אֲשֶׁ֖ר [2] Tip'cha
עַל־דֶּ֣רֶךְ תִּמְנָ֑תָה [1] Etnachta
 
כִּ֤י רָאֲתָה֙ [3] Pashta
כִּֽי־גָדַ֣ל שֵׁלָ֔ה [2] Zaqef
 
וְהִ֕וא [2] ZaqefG
לֹֽא־נִתְּנָ֥ה ל֖וֹ [2] Tip'cha
לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ [1] Silluq

from her, [3]
 
and she covered with the veil [3]
and she wrapped herself up, [2]
 
and she sat [3 3]
in the gate of Enaim [2]
 
which [2]
is on the road to Timnah; [1]
 
for she saw [3]
that Shelah had grown up, [2]
 
and she, [2]
she had not been given to him [2]
as a wife. [1]
15 וַיִּרְאֶ֣הָ יְהוּדָ֔ה [2] Zaqef
וַֽיַּחְשְׁבֶ֖הָ [2] Tip'cha
לְזוֹנָ֑ה [1] Etnachta
 
כִּ֥י כִסְּתָ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
פָּנֶֽיהָ׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 2 2 15 And Judah saw her, [2]
and he considered her [2]
a prostitute; [1]
 
for she had covered [2]
her face. [1]
16 וַיֵּ֨ט אֵלֶ֜יהָ [4] Geresh
אֶל־הַדֶּ֗רֶךְ [3] Revi'i
 
וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ [3 3] Pashta
הָֽבָה־נָּא֙ [3] Pashta
אָב֣וֹא אֵלַ֔יִךְ [2] Zaqef
 
כִּ֚י [3] Yetiv
לֹ֣א יָדַ֔ע [2] Zaqef
 
כִּ֥י כַלָּת֖וֹ [2] Tip'cha
הִ֑וא [1] Etnachta
 
וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ [3 3] Pashta
מַה־תִּתֶּן־לִ֔י [2] Zaqef
 
כִּ֥י תָב֖וֹא [2] Tip'cha
אֵלָֽי׃ [1] Silluq

along the road, [3]
 
and he said, [3 3]
“Please come, [3]
let me come in to you,” [2]
 
for [3]
he didn’t know [2]
 
that his daughter-in-law [2]
she was; [1]
 
and she said, [3 3]
“What will you give to me, [2]
 
that you may come in [2]
to me?” [1]
17 וַיֹּ֕אמֶר [2] ZaqefG
 
אָנֹכִ֛י [3] Tevir
אֲשַׁלַּ֥ח גְּדִֽי־עִזִּ֖ים [2] Tip'cha
מִן־הַצֹּ֑אן [1] Etnachta
 
וַתֹּ֕אמֶר [2] ZaqefG
אִם־תִּתֵּ֥ן עֵרָב֖וֹן [2] Tip'cha
עַ֥ד שׇׁלְחֶֽךָ׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 2 3 2 2 17 And he said, [2]
 
“I, [3]
I will send a young goat [2]
from the flock.” [1]
 
and she said, [2]
“Will you give a pledge, [2]
until you send it?” [1]
18 וַיֹּ֗אמֶר [3] Revi'i
מָ֣ה הָעֵֽרָבוֹן֮ [3] Zarqa
אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֶתֶּן־לָךְ֒ [2] Segol
 
וַתֹּ֗אמֶר [3] Revi'i
חֹתָֽמְךָ֙ [3] Pashta
וּפְתִילֶ֔ךָ [2] Zaqef
 
וּמַטְּךָ֖ [2] Tip'cha
אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּיָדֶ֑ךָ [1] Etnachta
 
וַיִּתֶּן־לָ֛הּ [3] Tevir
וַיָּבֹ֥א אֵלֶ֖יהָ [2] Tip'cha
וַתַּ֥הַר לֽוֹ׃ [1] Silluq

“What pledge [3]
shall I give to you?” [2]
 
And she said, [3]
“Your signet [3]
and your cord, [2]
 
and your staff [2]
which is in your hand.” [1]
 
And he gave them to her [3]
and he went in to her, [2]
and she conceived by him. [1]
19 וַתָּ֣קׇם וַתֵּ֔לֶךְ [2] Zaqef
וַתָּ֥סַר צְעִיפָ֖הּ [2] Tip'cha
מֵעָלֶ֑יהָ [1] Etnachta
 
וַתִּלְבַּ֖שׁ [2] Tip'cha
בִּגְדֵ֥י אַלְמְנוּתָֽהּ׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 2 2 19 And she arose and she left, [2]
and she removed her veil [2]
from her; [1]
 
and she put on [2]
the garments of her widowhood. [1]
20 וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח יְהוּדָ֜ה [4] Geresh
אֶת־גְּדִ֣י הָֽעִזִּ֗ים [3] Revi'i
 
בְּיַד֙ [3] Pashta
רֵעֵ֣הוּ הָֽעֲדֻלָּמִ֔י [2] Zaqef
 
לָקַ֥חַת הָעֵרָב֖וֹן [2] Tip'cha
מִיַּ֣ד הָאִשָּׁ֑ה [1] Etnachta
 
וְלֹ֖א [2] Tip'cha
מְצָאָֽהּ׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 3 4 3 2 2 20 And Judah sent [4]
the young goat [3]
 
by the hand [3]
of his friend the Adullamite, [2]
 
to take the pledge [2]
from the hand of the woman; [1]
 
but not [2]
did he find her. [1]
21 וַיִּשְׁאַ֞ל [4] Gershayim
אֶת־אַנְשֵׁ֤י מְקֹמָהּ֙ [3] Pashta
לֵאמֹ֔ר [2] Zaqef
 
אַיֵּ֧ה הַקְּדֵשָׁ֛ה [3] Tevir
הִ֥וא בָעֵינַ֖יִם [2] Tip'cha
עַל־הַדָּ֑רֶךְ [1] Etnachta
 
וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ [2] Zaqef
לֹא־הָיְתָ֥ה בָזֶ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
קְדֵשָֽׁה׃ [1] Silluq

the men of her place, [3]
saying, [2]
 
“Where is the prostitute [3]
who was at Enaim, [2]
by the road?” [1]
 
And they said, [2]
“There has not been here [2]
a prostitute.” [1]
22 וַיָּ֙שׇׁב֙ [3 3] Pashta
אֶל־יְהוּדָ֔ה [2] Zaqef
 
וַיֹּ֖אמֶר [2] Tip'cha
לֹ֣א מְצָאתִ֑יהָ [1] Etnachta
 
וְגַ֨ם אַנְשֵׁ֤י הַמָּקוֹם֙ [3] Pashta
אָֽמְר֔וּ [2] Zaqef
 
לֹא־הָיְתָ֥ה בָזֶ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
קְדֵשָֽׁה׃ [1] Silluq

to Judah, [2]
 
and he said, [2]
“I haven’t found her; [1]
 
and also the men of the place, [3]
they said, [2]
 
‘There has not been here [2]
a prostitute.’ ” [1]
23 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוּדָה֙ [3] Pashta
תִּֽקַּֽח־לָ֔הּ [2] Zaqef
 
פֶּ֖ן [2] Tip'cha
נִהְיֶ֣ה לָב֑וּז [1] Etnachta
 
הִנֵּ֤ה שָׁלַ֙חְתִּי֙ [3 3] Pashta
הַגְּדִ֣י הַזֶּ֔ה [2] Zaqef
 
וְאַתָּ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
לֹ֥א מְצָאתָֽהּ׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 3 2 2 3 2 23 And Judah said, [3]
“Let her keep them, [2]
 
lest [2]
we be shamed. [1]
 
Behold, I sent [3 3]
this young goat, [2]
 
and you, [2]
you haven’t found her.” [1]
24 וַיְהִ֣י ׀ [4] Legarmeh
כְּמִשְׁלֹ֣שׁ חֳדָשִׁ֗ים [3] Revi'i
 
וַיֻּגַּ֨ד לִֽיהוּדָ֤ה לֵֽאמֹר֙ [3] Pashta
זָֽנְתָה֙ [3] Pashta
תָּמָ֣ר כַּלָּתֶ֔ךָ [2] Zaqef
 
וְגַ֛ם [3] Tevir
הִנֵּ֥ה הָרָ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
לִזְנוּנִ֑ים [1] Etnachta
 
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוּדָ֔ה [2] Zaqef
הוֹצִיא֖וּהָ [2] Tip'cha
וְתִשָּׂרֵֽף׃ [1] Silluq

about three months, [3]
 
Judah was told saying, [3]
“She has acted as a prostitute, [3]
Tamar your daughter-in-law, [2]
 
and also [3]
behold, she is with child [2]
by prostitution.” [1]
 
And Judah said, [2]
“Bring her out [2]
and let her be burned.” [1]
25 הִ֣וא מוּצֵ֗את [3] Revi'i
וְהִ֨יא שָׁלְחָ֤ה אֶל־חָמִ֙יהָ֙ [3 3] Pashta
לֵאמֹ֔ר [2] Zaqef
 
לְאִישׁ֙ [3] Pashta
אֲשֶׁר־אֵ֣לֶּה לּ֔וֹ [2] Zaqef
 
אָנֹכִ֖י [2] Tip'cha
הָרָ֑ה [1] Etnachta
 
וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ [3 3] Pashta
הַכֶּר־נָ֔א [2] Zaqef
 
לְמִ֞י [4] Gershayim
הַחֹתֶ֧מֶת וְהַפְּתִילִ֛ים [3] Tevir
וְהַמַּטֶּ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ [1] Silluq

she sent to her father-in-law [3 3]
saying, [2]
 
“By the man [3]
who owns these, [2]
 
I [2]
am with child.” [1]
 
And she said, [3 3]
“Please investigate [2]
 
to whom belong [4]
the signet and the cord [3]
and the staff, [2]
these.” [1]
26 וַיַּכֵּ֣ר יְהוּדָ֗ה [3] Revi'i
וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ [3 3] Pashta
צָֽדְקָ֣ה מִמֶּ֔נִּי [2] Zaqef
 
כִּֽי־עַל־כֵּ֥ן לֹא־נְתַתִּ֖יהָ [2] Tip'cha
לְשֵׁלָ֣ה בְנִ֑י [1] Etnachta
 
וְלֹֽא־יָסַ֥ף ע֖וֹד [2] Tip'cha
לְדַעְתָּֽהּ׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 3 3 2 2 26 And Judah recognized them, [3]
and he said, [3 3]
“She is more righteous than I, [2]
 
because I didn’t give her [2]
to Shelah my son.” [1]
 
And not anymore did he [2]
know her. [1]
27 וַיְהִ֖י [2] Tip'cha
בְּעֵ֣ת לִדְתָּ֑הּ [1] Etnachta
 
וְהִנֵּ֥ה תְאוֹמִ֖ים [2] Tip'cha
בְּבִטְנָֽהּ׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 2 27 And it happened [2]
at the time of her travail; [1]
 
behold, twins [2]
were in her womb. [1]
28 וַיְהִ֥י בְלִדְתָּ֖הּ [2] Tip'cha
וַיִּתֶּן־יָ֑ד [1] Etnachta
 
וַתִּקַּ֣ח הַמְיַלֶּ֗דֶת [3] Revi'i
וַתִּקְשֹׁ֨ר עַל־יָד֤וֹ שָׁנִי֙ [3] Pashta
לֵאמֹ֔ר [2] Zaqef
 
זֶ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
יָצָ֥א רִאשֹׁנָֽה׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 2 3 3 2 28 And when she was giving birth, [2]
one put out a hand; [1]
 
and the midwife took [3]
and she tied on his hand a scarlet thread [3]
saying, [2]
 
“This one [2]
he came out first.” [1]
29 וַיְהִ֣י ׀ [4] Legarmeh
כְּמֵשִׁ֣יב יָד֗וֹ [3] Revi'i
 
וְהִנֵּה֙ [3] Pashta
יָצָ֣א אָחִ֔יו [2] Zaqef
 
וַתֹּ֕אמֶר [2] ZaqefG
מַה־פָּרַ֖צְתָּ [2] Tip'cha
עָלֶ֣יךָ פָּ֑רֶץ [1] Etnachta
 
וַיִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ [2] Tip'cha
פָּֽרֶץ׃ [1] Silluq

as he drew back his hand, [3]
 
behold, [3]
his brother came out, [2]
 
and she said, [2]
“Why have you made a breach, [2]
a breach on yourself?” [1]
 
And his name was called [2]
Perez. [1]
30 וְאַחַר֙ [3] Pashta
יָצָ֣א אָחִ֔יו [2] Zaqef
 
אֲשֶׁ֥ר עַל־יָד֖וֹ [2] Tip'cha
הַשָּׁנִ֑י [1] Etnachta
 
וַיִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ [2] Tip'cha
זָֽרַח׃ [1] Silluq
