1 וַֽיְהִי֙ [3] Pashta בָּעֵ֣ת הַהִ֔וא [2] Zaqef מֵאֵ֣ת אֶחָ֑יו [1] Etnachta עַד־אִ֥ישׁ עֲדֻלָּמִ֖י [2] Tip'cha וּשְׁמ֥וֹ חִירָֽה׃ [1] Silluq |
1 And it happened [3] at that time, [2] from his brothers; [1] an Adullamite man [2] whose name was Hirah. [1] |

2 וַיַּרְא־שָׁ֧ם יְהוּדָ֛ה [3] Tevir בַּת־אִ֥ישׁ כְּנַעֲנִ֖י [2] Tip'cha וּשְׁמ֣וֹ שׁ֑וּעַ [1] Etnachta וַיָּבֹ֥א אֵלֶֽיהָ׃ [1] Silluq |
2 And there Judah saw [3] a daughter of a Canaanite man [2] whose name was Shua; [1] and he went in to her. [1] |

3 וַתַּ֖הַר [2] Tip'cha וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֑ן [1] Etnachta עֵֽר׃ [1] Silluq |
3 And she conceived [2] and she bore a son; [1] Er. [1] |
|||
4 וַתַּ֥הַר ע֖וֹד [2] Tip'cha וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֑ן [1] Etnachta אוֹנָֽן׃ [1] Silluq |
4 And she conceived again [2] and she bore a son; [1] Onan. [1] |
|||
5 וַתֹּ֤סֶף עוֹד֙ [3] Pashta וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֔ן [2] Zaqef שֵׁלָ֑ה [1] Etnachta בְּלִדְתָּ֥הּ אֹתֽוֹ׃ [1] Silluq |
5 And she yet again [3] bore a son, [2] Shelah; [1] when she bore him. [1] |

6 וַיִּקַּ֧ח יְהוּדָ֛ה [3] Tevir אִשָּׁ֖ה [2] Tip'cha לְעֵ֣ר בְּכוֹר֑וֹ [1] Etnachta תָּמָֽר׃ [1] Silluq |
6 And Judah took [3] a wife [2] for Er his firstborn; [1] was Tamar. [1] |

7 וַיְהִ֗י [3] Revi'i עֵ֚ר [3] Yetiv בְּכ֣וֹר יְהוּדָ֔ה [2] Zaqef בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהֹוָ֑ה [1] Etnachta יְהֹוָֽה׃ [1] Silluq |
7 And he was, [3] Er [3] the firstborn of Judah, [2] in the LORD’s sight; [1] The LORD. [1] |

8 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוּדָה֙ [3] Pashta לְאוֹנָ֔ן [2] Zaqef אֶל־אֵ֥שֶׁת אָחִ֖יךָ [2] Tip'cha וְיַבֵּ֣ם אֹתָ֑הּ [1] Etnachta לְאָחִֽיךָ׃ [1] Silluq |
8 And Judah said [3] to Onan, [2] to the wife of your brother, [2] and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her; [1] for your brother.” [1] |

9 וַיֵּ֣דַע אוֹנָ֔ן [2] Zaqef לֹּ֥א ל֖וֹ [2] Tip'cha יִהְיֶ֣ה הַזָּ֑רַע [1] Etnachta אִם־בָּ֨א אֶל־אֵ֤שֶׁת אָחִיו֙ [3] Pashta וְשִׁחֵ֣ת אַ֔רְצָה [2] Zaqef לְאָחִֽיו׃ [1] Silluq |
9 And Onan knew [2] not to him [2] would belong the offspring; [1] when he went in to the wife of his brother, [3] he spilled it on the ground, [2] to his brother. [1] |

10 וַיֵּ֛רַע [3] Tevir בְּעֵינֵ֥י יְהֹוָ֖ה [2] Tip'cha אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֑ה [1] Etnachta גַּם־אֹתֽוֹ׃ [1] Silluq |
10 And it was evil [3] in the LORD’s sight, [2] that which he had done; [1] him also. [1] |

11 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוּדָה֩ לְתָמָ֨ר כַּלָּת֜וֹ [4] Geresh שְׁבִ֧י אַלְמָנָ֣ה בֵית־אָבִ֗יךְ [3] Revi'i שֵׁלָ֣ה בְנִ֔י [2] Zaqef פֶּן־יָמ֥וּת גַּם־ה֖וּא [2] Tip'cha כְּאֶחָ֑יו [1] Etnachta וַתֵּ֖שֶׁב [2] Tip'cha בֵּ֥ית אָבִֽיהָ׃ [1] Silluq |
11 Then Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, [4] “Remain a widow in your father’s house, [3] Shelah my son,” [2] “Lest he die, he too, [2] like his brothers.” [1] and she lived [2] in her father’s house. [1] |

12 וַיִּרְבּוּ֙ [3] Pashta הַיָּמִ֔ים [2] Zaqef בַּת־שׁ֣וּעַ אֵֽשֶׁת־יְהוּדָ֑ה [1] Etnachta עַל־גֹּֽזְזֵ֤י צֹאנוֹ֙ [3] Pashta וְחִירָ֛ה [3] Tevir רֵעֵ֥הוּ הָעֲדֻלָּמִ֖י [2] Tip'cha |
12 And many they passed, [3] the days, [2] the daughter of Shua, the wife of Judah; [1] to his sheep shearers, [3] and Hirah [3] his friend the Adullamite, [2] |

13 וַיֻּגַּ֥ד לְתָמָ֖ר [2] Tip'cha לֵאמֹ֑ר [1] Etnachta עֹלֶ֥ה תִמְנָ֖תָה [2] Tip'cha לָגֹ֥ז צֹאנֽוֹ׃ [1] Silluq |
13 And Tamar was told [2] saying; [1] is going up to Timnah [2] to shear his sheep.” [1] |

14 וַתָּ֩סַר֩ בִּגְדֵ֨י אַלְמְנוּתָ֜הּ [4] Geresh מֵֽעָלֶ֗יהָ [3] Revi'i וַתִּתְעַלָּ֔ף [2] Zaqef בְּפֶ֣תַח עֵינַ֔יִם [2] Zaqef עַל־דֶּ֣רֶךְ תִּמְנָ֑תָה [1] Etnachta כִּֽי־גָדַ֣ל שֵׁלָ֔ה [2] Zaqef לֹֽא־נִתְּנָ֥ה ל֖וֹ [2] Tip'cha לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ [1] Silluq |
14 And she took off the garments of her widowhood [4] from her, [3] and she wrapped herself up, [2] in the gate of Enaim [2] is on the road to Timnah; [1] that Shelah had grown up, [2] she had not been given to him [2] as a wife. [1] |

15 וַיִּרְאֶ֣הָ יְהוּדָ֔ה [2] Zaqef וַֽיַּחְשְׁבֶ֖הָ [2] Tip'cha לְזוֹנָ֑ה [1] Etnachta פָּנֶֽיהָ׃ [1] Silluq |
15 And Judah saw her, [2] and he considered her [2] a prostitute; [1] her face. [1] |

16 וַיֵּ֨ט אֵלֶ֜יהָ [4] Geresh אֶל־הַדֶּ֗רֶךְ [3] Revi'i הָֽבָה־נָּא֙ [3] Pashta אָב֣וֹא אֵלַ֔יִךְ [2] Zaqef לֹ֣א יָדַ֔ע [2] Zaqef הִ֑וא [1] Etnachta מַה־תִּתֶּן־לִ֔י [2] Zaqef אֵלָֽי׃ [1] Silluq |
16 And he turned aside to her [4] along the road, [3] “Please come, [3] let me come in to you,” [2] he didn’t know [2] she was; [1] “What will you give to me, [2] to me?” [1] |

17 וַיֹּ֕אמֶר [2] ZaqefG אֲשַׁלַּ֥ח גְּדִֽי־עִזִּ֖ים [2] Tip'cha מִן־הַצֹּ֑אן [1] Etnachta אִם־תִּתֵּ֥ן עֵרָב֖וֹן [2] Tip'cha עַ֥ד שׇׁלְחֶֽךָ׃ [1] Silluq |
17 And he said, [2] I will send a young goat [2] from the flock.” [1] “Will you give a pledge, [2] until you send it?” [1] |

18 וַיֹּ֗אמֶר [3] Revi'i מָ֣ה הָעֵֽרָבוֹן֮ [3] Zarqa אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֶתֶּן־לָךְ֒ [2] Segol חֹתָֽמְךָ֙ [3] Pashta וּפְתִילֶ֔ךָ [2] Zaqef אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּיָדֶ֑ךָ [1] Etnachta וַיָּבֹ֥א אֵלֶ֖יהָ [2] Tip'cha וַתַּ֥הַר לֽוֹ׃ [1] Silluq |
18 And he said, [3] “What pledge [3] shall I give to you?” [2] “Your signet [3] and your cord, [2] which is in your hand.” [1] and he went in to her, [2] and she conceived by him. [1] |

19 וַתָּ֣קׇם וַתֵּ֔לֶךְ [2] Zaqef וַתָּ֥סַר צְעִיפָ֖הּ [2] Tip'cha מֵעָלֶ֑יהָ [1] Etnachta בִּגְדֵ֥י אַלְמְנוּתָֽהּ׃ [1] Silluq |
19 And she arose and she left, [2] and she removed her veil [2] from her; [1] the garments of her widowhood. [1] |

20 וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח יְהוּדָ֜ה [4] Geresh אֶת־גְּדִ֣י הָֽעִזִּ֗ים [3] Revi'i רֵעֵ֣הוּ הָֽעֲדֻלָּמִ֔י [2] Zaqef מִיַּ֣ד הָאִשָּׁ֑ה [1] Etnachta מְצָאָֽהּ׃ [1] Silluq |
20 And Judah sent [4] the young goat [3] of his friend the Adullamite, [2] from the hand of the woman; [1] did he find her. [1] |

21 וַיִּשְׁאַ֞ל [4] Gershayim אֶת־אַנְשֵׁ֤י מְקֹמָהּ֙ [3] Pashta לֵאמֹ֔ר [2] Zaqef הִ֥וא בָעֵינַ֖יִם [2] Tip'cha עַל־הַדָּ֑רֶךְ [1] Etnachta לֹא־הָיְתָ֥ה בָזֶ֖ה [2] Tip'cha קְדֵשָֽׁה׃ [1] Silluq |
21 Then he asked [4] the men of her place, [3] saying, [2] who was at Enaim, [2] by the road?” [1] “There has not been here [2] a prostitute.” [1] |

22 וַיָּ֙שׇׁב֙ [3 3] Pashta אֶל־יְהוּדָ֔ה [2] Zaqef לֹ֣א מְצָאתִ֑יהָ [1] Etnachta אָֽמְר֔וּ [2] Zaqef קְדֵשָֽׁה׃ [1] Silluq |
22 And he returned [3 3] to Judah, [2] “I haven’t found her; [1] they said, [2] a prostitute.’ ” [1] |

23 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוּדָה֙ [3] Pashta תִּֽקַּֽח־לָ֔הּ [2] Zaqef נִהְיֶ֣ה לָב֑וּז [1] Etnachta הַגְּדִ֣י הַזֶּ֔ה [2] Zaqef לֹ֥א מְצָאתָֽהּ׃ [1] Silluq |
23 And Judah said, [3] “Let her keep them, [2] we be shamed. [1] this young goat, [2] you haven’t found her.” [1] |

24 וַיְהִ֣י ׀ [4] Legarmeh כְּמִשְׁלֹ֣שׁ חֳדָשִׁ֗ים [3] Revi'i זָֽנְתָה֙ [3] Pashta תָּמָ֣ר כַּלָּתֶ֔ךָ [2] Zaqef הִנֵּ֥ה הָרָ֖ה [2] Tip'cha לִזְנוּנִ֑ים [1] Etnachta הוֹצִיא֖וּהָ [2] Tip'cha וְתִשָּׂרֵֽף׃ [1] Silluq |
24 And after [4] about three months, [3] “She has acted as a prostitute, [3] Tamar your daughter-in-law, [2] behold, she is with child [2] by prostitution.” [1] “Bring her out [2] and let her be burned.” [1] |

25 הִ֣וא מוּצֵ֗את [3] Revi'i וְהִ֨יא שָׁלְחָ֤ה אֶל־חָמִ֙יהָ֙ [3 3] Pashta לֵאמֹ֔ר [2] Zaqef אֲשֶׁר־אֵ֣לֶּה לּ֔וֹ [2] Zaqef הָרָ֑ה [1] Etnachta הַכֶּר־נָ֔א [2] Zaqef הַחֹתֶ֧מֶת וְהַפְּתִילִ֛ים [3] Tevir וְהַמַּטֶּ֖ה [2] Tip'cha הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ [1] Silluq |
25 When she was brought out, [3] she sent to her father-in-law [3 3] saying, [2] who owns these, [2] am with child.” [1] “Please investigate [2] the signet and the cord [3] and the staff, [2] these.” [1] |

26 וַיַּכֵּ֣ר יְהוּדָ֗ה [3] Revi'i וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ [3 3] Pashta צָֽדְקָ֣ה מִמֶּ֔נִּי [2] Zaqef לְשֵׁלָ֣ה בְנִ֑י [1] Etnachta לְדַעְתָּֽהּ׃ [1] Silluq |
26 And Judah recognized them, [3] and he said, [3 3] “She is more righteous than I, [2] to Shelah my son.” [1] know her. [1] |

27 וַיְהִ֖י [2] Tip'cha בְּעֵ֣ת לִדְתָּ֑הּ [1] Etnachta בְּבִטְנָֽהּ׃ [1] Silluq |
27 And it happened [2] at the time of her travail; [1] were in her womb. [1] |

28 וַיְהִ֥י בְלִדְתָּ֖הּ [2] Tip'cha וַיִּתֶּן־יָ֑ד [1] Etnachta וַתִּקְשֹׁ֨ר עַל־יָד֤וֹ שָׁנִי֙ [3] Pashta לֵאמֹ֔ר [2] Zaqef יָצָ֥א רִאשֹׁנָֽה׃ [1] Silluq |
28 And when she was giving birth, [2] one put out a hand; [1] and she tied on his hand a scarlet thread [3] saying, [2] he came out first.” [1] |

29 וַיְהִ֣י ׀ [4] Legarmeh כְּמֵשִׁ֣יב יָד֗וֹ [3] Revi'i יָצָ֣א אָחִ֔יו [2] Zaqef מַה־פָּרַ֖צְתָּ [2] Tip'cha עָלֶ֣יךָ פָּ֑רֶץ [1] Etnachta פָּֽרֶץ׃ [1] Silluq |
29 And it happened, [4] as he drew back his hand, [3] his brother came out, [2] “Why have you made a breach, [2] a breach on yourself?” [1] Perez. [1] |
