the word of the LORD [2]
 
to Jonah the son of Amittai [2]
saying, [1]

לֵ֧ךְ אֶל־נִֽינְוֵ֛ה [3] Tevir
הָעִ֥יר הַגְּדוֹלָ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
וּקְרָ֣א עָלֶ֑יהָ [1] Etnachta
 
כִּֽי־עָלְתָ֥ה רָעָתָ֖ם [2] Tip'cha
לְפָנָֽי׃ [1] Silluq

go to Nineveh [3]
the great city [2]
and proclaim against it; [1]
 
for their wickedness has come up [2]
before me.” [1]

וַיִּמְצָ֥א אֳנִיָּ֣ה ׀ [4] Legarmeh
בָּאָ֣ה תַרְשִׁ֗ישׁ [3] Revi'i
 
וַיִּתֵּ֨ן שְׂכָרָ֜הּ [4] Geresh
וַיֵּ֤רֶד בָּהּ֙ [3] Pashta
 
לָב֤וֹא עִמָּהֶם֙ [3] Pashta
תַּרְשִׁ֔ישָׁה [2] Zaqef

and he went down to Joppa, [4]
and he found a ship [4]
which was going to Tarshish, [3]
 
so he paid its fare [4]
and he went down into it [3]
 
to go with them [3]
to Tarshish, [2]
 
from before [2]
the LORD. [1]
4 וַֽיהֹוָ֗ה [3] Revi'i
הֵטִ֤יל רֽוּחַ־גְּדוֹלָה֙ [3] Pashta
אֶל־הַיָּ֔ם [2] Zaqef
 
וַיְהִ֥י סַֽעַר־גָּד֖וֹל [2] Tip'cha
בַּיָּ֑ם [1] Etnachta
 
וְהָ֣אֳנִיָּ֔ה [2] Zaqef
חִשְּׁבָ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
לְהִשָּׁבֵֽר׃ [1] Silluq

he sent out a great wind [3]
on the sea, [2]
 
and there was a mighty storm [2]
on the sea; [1]
 
so that the ship [2]
was likely [2]
to break up. [1]
5 וַיִּֽירְא֣וּ הַמַּלָּחִ֗ים [3] Revi'i
וַֽיִּזְעֲקוּ֮ [3] Zarqa
אִ֣ישׁ אֶל־אֱלֹהָיו֒ [2] Segol
 
וַיָּטִ֨לוּ אֶת־הַכֵּלִ֜ים [4] Geresh
אֲשֶׁ֤ר בָּֽאֳנִיָּה֙ [3] Pashta
אֶל־הַיָּ֔ם [2] Zaqef
 
לְהָקֵ֖ל [2] Tip'cha
מֵֽעֲלֵיהֶ֑ם [1] Etnachta
 
וְיוֹנָ֗ה [3] Revi'i
יָרַד֙ [3] Pashta
אֶל־יַרְכְּתֵ֣י הַסְּפִינָ֔ה [2] Zaqef
 
וַיִּשְׁכַּ֖ב [2] Tip'cha
וַיֵּרָדַֽם׃ [1] Silluq

and they cried for help [3]
each man to his gods, [2]
 
and they threw the cargo [4]
which was in the ship [3]
into the sea [2]
 
to lighten [2]
the ship; [1]
 
but Jonah, [3]
he had gone down [3]
into the innermost parts of the ship, [2]
 
and he was lying down, [2]
and he had fallen fast asleep. [1]
6 וַיִּקְרַ֤ב אֵלָיו֙ [3] Pashta
רַ֣ב הַחֹבֵ֔ל [2] Zaqef
 
וַיֹּ֥אמֶר ל֖וֹ [2] Tip'cha
מַה־לְּךָ֣ נִרְדָּ֑ם [1] Etnachta
 
ק֚וּם [3] Yetiv
קְרָ֣א אֶל־אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ [2] Zaqef
 
אוּלַ֞י [4] Gershayim
יִתְעַשֵּׁ֧ת הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים [3] Tevir
לָ֖נוּ [2] Tip'cha
וְלֹ֥א נֹאבֵֽד׃ [1] Silluq

the ship master, [2]
 
and he said to him, [2]
“Why are you sleeping? [1]
 
Arise, [3]
call on your God! [2]
 
Maybe [4]
the God will give thought [3]
to us, [2]
so that we won’t perish.” [1]
7 וַיֹּאמְר֞וּ [4] Gershayim
אִ֣ישׁ אֶל־רֵעֵ֗הוּ [3] Revi'i
 
לְכוּ֙ [3] Pashta
וְנַפִּ֣ילָה גֽוֹרָל֔וֹת [2] Zaqef
 
וְנֵ֣דְעָ֔ה [2] Zaqef
 
בְּשֶׁלְּמִ֛י [3] Tevir
הָרָעָ֥ה הַזֹּ֖את [2] Tip'cha
לָ֑נוּ [1] Etnachta
 
וַיַּפִּ֙לוּ֙ [3 3] Pashta
גּֽוֹרָל֔וֹת [2] Zaqef
 
וַיִּפֹּ֥ל הַגּוֹרָ֖ל [2] Tip'cha
עַל־יוֹנָֽה׃ [1] Silluq

all of them to each other, [3]
 
“Come! [3]
And let’s cast lots, [2]
 
that we may know [2]
 
who is responsible for [3]
this evil [2]
that is on us.” [1]

lots, [2]
 
and the lot fell [2]
on Jonah. [1]

הַגִּידָה־נָּ֣א לָ֔נוּ [2] Zaqef
 
בַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר [3] Tevir
לְמִי־הָרָעָ֥ה הַזֹּ֖את [2] Tip'cha
לָ֑נוּ [1] Etnachta
 
מַה־מְּלַאכְתְּךָ֙ [3] Pashta
וּמֵאַ֣יִן תָּב֔וֹא [2] Zaqef
 
מָ֣ה אַרְצֶ֔ךָ [2] Zaqef
וְאֵֽי־מִזֶּ֥ה עַ֖ם [2] Tip'cha
אָֽתָּה׃ [1] Silluq

“Tell us, please, [2]
 
for [3]
whose cause this evil [2]
is on us. [1]
 
What is your occupation? [3]
And from where do you come? [2]
 
What is your country? [2]
And of what people [2]

9 וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם [2] Tip'cha
עִבְרִ֣י אָנֹ֑כִי [1] Etnachta
 
וְאֶת־יְהֹוָ֞ה [4] Gershayim
אֱלֹהֵ֤י הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ [3 3] Pashta
אֲנִ֣י יָרֵ֔א [2] Zaqef
 
אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂ֥ה אֶת־הַיָּ֖ם [2] Tip'cha
וְאֶת־הַיַּבָּשָֽׁה׃ [1] Silluq

“I am a Hebrew; [1]
 
and the LORD [4]
the God of the heavens, [3 3]
I fear, [2]
 
who made the sea [2]
and the dry land.” [1]
10 וַיִּֽירְא֤וּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ [3] Pashta
יִרְאָ֣ה גְדוֹלָ֔ה [2] Zaqef
 
וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ אֵלָ֖יו [2] Tip'cha
מַה־זֹּ֣את עָשִׂ֑יתָ [1] Etnachta
 
כִּֽי־יָדְע֣וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים [3] Revi'i
כִּֽי־מִלִּפְנֵ֤י יְהֹוָה֙ [3] Pashta
ה֣וּא בֹרֵ֔חַ [2] Zaqef
 
כִּ֥י הִגִּ֖יד [2] Tip'cha
לָהֶֽם׃ [1] Silluq

a great fear, [2]
 
and they said to him, [2]
“What is this you have done?” [1]
 
For the men knew [3]
that from before the LORD [3]
he was fleeing, [2]
 
because he had told [2]
them. [1]
11 וַיֹּאמְר֤וּ אֵלָיו֙ [3] Pashta
מַה־נַּ֣עֲשֶׂה לָּ֔ךְ [2] Zaqef
 
וְיִשְׁתֹּ֥ק הַיָּ֖ם [2] Tip'cha
מֵֽעָלֵ֑ינוּ [1] Etnachta
 
כִּ֥י הַיָּ֖ם [2] Tip'cha
הוֹלֵ֥ךְ וְסֹעֵֽר׃ [1] Silluq

“What shall we do to you, [2]
 
that the sea may be calm [2]
for us?” [1]
 
For the sea [2]
grew more and more stormy. [1]
12 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם [3] Revi'i
שָׂא֙וּנִי֙ [3 3] Pashta
וַהֲטִילֻ֣נִי אֶל־הַיָּ֔ם [2] Zaqef
 
וְיִשְׁתֹּ֥ק הַיָּ֖ם [2] Tip'cha
מֵֽעֲלֵיכֶ֑ם [1] Etnachta
 
כִּ֚י [3] Yetiv
יוֹדֵ֣עַ אָ֔נִי [2] Zaqef
 
כִּ֣י בְשֶׁלִּ֔י [2] Zaqef
 
הַסַּ֧עַר הַגָּד֛וֹל [3] Tevir
הַזֶּ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
עֲלֵיכֶֽם׃ [1] Silluq

“Pick me up [3 3]
and throw me into the sea, [2]
 
and the sea will be calm [2]
for you; [1]
 
for [3]
I know [2]
 
that because of me [2]
 
the great storm, [3]
this [2]
is upon you.” [1]
13 וַיַּחְתְּר֣וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים [3] Revi'i
לְהָשִׁ֛יב [3] Tevir
אֶל־הַיַּבָּשָׁ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
וְלֹ֣א יָכֹ֑לוּ [1] Etnachta
 
כִּ֣י הַיָּ֔ם [2] Zaqef
הוֹלֵ֥ךְ וְסֹעֵ֖ר [2] Tip'cha
עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ [1] Silluq

to get them back [3]
to the land, [2]
but they could not; [1]
 
for the sea [2]
grew more and more stormy [2]
against them. [1]
14 וַיִּקְרְא֨וּ אֶל־יְהֹוָ֜ה [4] Geresh
וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ [3] Revi'i
 
אָנָּ֤ה יְהֹוָה֙ [3] Pashta
אַל־נָ֣א נֹאבְדָ֗ה [3] Revi'i
בְּנֶ֙פֶשׁ֙ [3 3] Pashta
הָאִ֣ישׁ הַזֶּ֔ה [2] Zaqef
 
וְאַל־תִּתֵּ֥ן עָלֵ֖ינוּ [2] Tip'cha
דָּ֣ם נָקִ֑יא [1] Etnachta
 
כִּֽי־אַתָּ֣ה יְהֹוָ֔ה [2] Zaqef
כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר חָפַ֖צְתָּ [2] Tip'cha
עָשִֽׂיתָ׃ [1] Silluq

“We beg you LORD, [3]
please don’t let us perish [3]
for the life [3 3]
of this man, [2]
 
and don’t lay on us [2]
innocent blood; [1]
 
for you LORD, [2]
just as you pleased [2]
you have done.” [1]
15 וַיִּשְׂאוּ֙ [3] Pashta
אֶת־יוֹנָ֔ה [2] Zaqef
 
וַיְטִלֻ֖הוּ [2] Tip'cha
אֶל־הַיָּ֑ם [1] Etnachta
 
וַיַּעֲמֹ֥ד הַיָּ֖ם [2] Tip'cha
מִזַּעְפּֽוֹ׃ [1] Silluq

Jonah, [2]
 
and they threw him [2]
into the sea; [1]
 
and the sea stopped [2]
its raging. [1]
16 וַיִּֽירְא֧וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֛ים [3] Tevir
יִרְאָ֥ה גְדוֹלָ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
אֶת־יְהֹוָ֑ה [1] Etnachta
 
וַיִּֽזְבְּחוּ־זֶ֙בַח֙ [3 3] Pashta
לַֽיהֹוָ֔ה [2] Zaqef
 
וַֽיִּדְּר֖וּ [2] Tip'cha
נְדָרִֽים׃ [1] Silluq

exceedingly [2]
the LORD; [1]
 
and they offered a sacrifice [3 3]
to the LORD, [2]
 
and they vowed [2]

to swallow up [2]
Jonah; [1]

in the belly of the fish [2]

to the LORD [2]
his God; [1]
 
from the belly [2]
of the fish. [1]

אֶל־יְהֹוָ֖ה [2] Tip'cha

שִׁוַּ֖עְתִּי [2] Tip'cha
שָׁמַ֥עְתָּ קוֹלִֽי׃ [1] Silluq

from my distress [3]
to the LORD, [2]
 
and he answered me; [1]
 
from the belly of Sheol [3]
I cried for help. [2]
You heard my voice. [1]
4 וַתַּשְׁלִיכֵ֤נִי מְצוּלָה֙ [3] Pashta
בִּלְבַ֣ב יַמִּ֔ים [2] Zaqef
 
וְנָהָ֖ר [2] Tip'cha
יְסֹבְבֵ֑נִי [1] Etnachta
 
כׇּל־מִשְׁבָּרֶ֥יךָ וְגַלֶּ֖יךָ [2] Tip'cha
עָלַ֥י עָבָֽרוּ׃ [1] Silluq

into the heart of the seas, [2]
 
and a river, [2]
it surrounds me; [1]
 
all your breakers and your waves, [2]
over me they have passed. [1]

נִגְרַ֖שְׁתִּי [2] Tip'cha
מִנֶּ֣גֶד עֵינֶ֑יךָ [1] Etnachta
 
אַ֚ךְ [3] Yetiv
אוֹסִ֣יף לְהַבִּ֔יט [2] Zaqef
 
אֶל־הֵיכַ֖ל [2] Tip'cha
קׇדְשֶֽׁךָ׃ [1] Silluq

‘I have been driven away [2]
from before your eyes; [1]
 
yet [3]
I will again look [2]
 
to the temple [2]
of your holiness.’ [1]

עַד־נֶ֔פֶשׁ [2] Zaqef
 
תְּה֖וֹם [2] Tip'cha
יְסֹבְבֵ֑נִי [1] Etnachta
 
ס֖וּף [2] Tip'cha
חָב֥וּשׁ לְרֹאשִֽׁי׃ [1] Silluq

even to the neck. [2]
 
The deep, [2]
it surrounds me. [1]
 
The seaweed [2]
clings to my head. [1]
7 לְקִצְבֵ֤י הָרִים֙ [3] Pashta

הָאָ֛רֶץ [3] Tevir
בְּרִחֶ֥יהָ בַעֲדִ֖י [2] Tip'cha
לְעוֹלָ֑ם [1] Etnachta
 
וַתַּ֧עַל מִשַּׁ֛חַת [3] Tevir
חַיַּ֖י [2] Tip'cha
יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהָֽי׃ [1] Silluq

the earth, [3]
its bars were behind me [2]
forever; [1]
 
yet you have brought up from the pit [3]
my life, [2]
O LORD my God. [1]

וַתָּב֤וֹא אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ [3 3] Pashta
תְּפִלָּתִ֔י [2] Zaqef
 
אֶל־הֵיכַ֖ל [2] Tip'cha
קׇדְשֶֽׁךָ׃ [1] Silluq

the LORD [2]
I remembered; [1]
 
and it came to you, [3 3]
my prayer, [2]
 
to the temple [2]
of your holiness. [1]

הַבְלֵי־שָׁ֑וְא [1] Etnachta
 
חַסְדָּ֖ם [2] Tip'cha
יַעֲזֹֽבוּ׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 2 8 Those who regard [2]
lying vanities; [1]
 
their own mercy [2]
they forsake. [1]
10 וַאֲנִ֗י [3] Revi'i
בְּק֤וֹל תּוֹדָה֙ [3] Pashta
אֶזְבְּחָה־לָּ֔ךְ [2] Zaqef
 
אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָדַ֖רְתִּי [2] Tip'cha
אֲשַׁלֵּ֑מָה [1] Etnachta
 
יְשׁוּעָ֖תָה [2] Tip'cha
לַיהֹוָֽה׃ [1] Silluq

with a voice of thanksgiving [3]
I will sacrifice to you. [2]
 
That which I have vowed, [2]
I will fulfill. [1]
 
Salvation [2]
belongs to the LORD.” [1]

and it vomited out Jonah [2]
onto the dry land. [1]

to Jonah [2]
a second time saying, [1]

לֵ֥ךְ אֶל־נִֽינְוֵ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
הָעִ֣יר הַגְּדוֹלָ֑ה [1] Etnachta
 
וּקְרָ֤א אֵלֶ֙יהָ֙ [3 3] Pashta
אֶת־הַקְּרִיאָ֔ה [2] Zaqef
 
אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָנֹכִ֖י [2] Tip'cha
דֹּבֵ֥ר אֵלֶֽיךָ׃ [1] Silluq

הָיְתָ֤ה עִיר־גְּדוֹלָה֙ [3] Pashta
לֵֽאלֹהִ֔ים [2] Zaqef
 
מַהֲלַ֖ךְ [2] Tip'cha
שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת יָמִֽים׃ [1] Silluq

and he went [3]
to Nineveh, [2]
according to the word of the LORD. [1]
 
Now Nineveh, [3]
it was a city great [3]
exceedingly [to Elohim], [2]
 
a journey [2]
of three days. [1]

לָב֣וֹא בָעִ֔יר [2] Zaqef
 
מַהֲלַ֖ךְ [2] Tip'cha
י֣וֹם אֶחָ֑ד [1] Etnachta
 
וַיִּקְרָא֙ [3] Pashta
וַיֹּאמַ֔ר [2] Zaqef
 
ע֚וֹד [3] Yetiv
אַרְבָּעִ֣ים י֔וֹם [2] Zaqef
 
וְנִֽינְוֵ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
נֶהְפָּֽכֶת׃ [1] Silluq

to enter into the city, [2]
 
a journey [2]
of one day; [1]

וַיַּעֲבֵ֥ר אַדַּרְתּ֖וֹ [2] Tip'cha
מֵֽעָלָ֑יו [1] Etnachta

וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב [2] Tip'cha
עַל־הָאֵֽפֶר׃ [1] Silluq

and he took off his royal robe [2]

and he covered with sackcloth, [2]

הָאָדָ֨ם וְהַבְּהֵמָ֜ה [4] Geresh
הַבָּקָ֣ר וְהַצֹּ֗אן [3] Revi'i

anything, [2]
 
don't let them graze, [2]
and water [2]
don't let them drink, [1]

וְיִקְרְא֥וּ אֶל־אֱלֹהִ֖ים [2] Tip'cha

וְיָשֻׁ֗בוּ [3] Revi'i
אִ֚ישׁ [3] Yetiv
מִדַּרְכּ֣וֹ הָֽרָעָ֔ה [2] Zaqef

אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּכַפֵּיהֶֽם׃ [1] Silluq

from his burning anger, [2]

מִדַּרְכָּ֣ם הָרָעָ֑ה [1] Etnachta
 
וַיִּנָּ֣חֶם הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים [3] Revi'i
עַל־הָרָעָ֛ה [3] Tevir
אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּ֥ר לַעֲשׂוֹת־לָהֶ֖ם [2] Tip'cha
וְלֹ֥א עָשָֽׂה׃ [1] Silluq

their deeds, [2]
 
that they turned back [2]
from their evil way; [1]
 
and God relented [3]
of the disaster [3]
which he had said to do to them, [2]

and abundant in lovingkindness, [2]
