The Death of Jesus

The Death of Jesus

33From the sixth hour until the ninth hour, there was darkness over the whole land. 34And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, [fn]lima sabachthani?” which means, [fn]My God, my God, why have yoʋ forsaken me?” 35When some of those standing nearby heard this, they said, “Behold, he is calling for Elijah.” 36Then [fn]a man ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Leave him alone. Let us see if Elijah comes to take him down.” 37But Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed his last breath. 38Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39Now when the centurion who was standing in front of Jesus saw how he [fn]cried out and breathed his last breath, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God.”

40There were also some women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. 41These women had followed Jesus and provided for him when he was in Galilee. There were also many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem.
