1 וַיְהִ֤י רָעָב֙ [3] Pashta
בָּאָ֔רֶץ [2] Zaqef
 
מִלְּבַד֙ [3] Pashta
הָרָעָ֣ב הָרִאשׁ֔וֹן [2] Zaqef
 
אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָיָ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
בִּימֵ֣י אַבְרָהָ֑ם [1] Etnachta
 
וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ יִצְחָ֛ק [3] Tevir
אֶל־אֲבִימֶ֥לֶךְ מֶֽלֶךְ־פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים [2] Tip'cha
גְּרָֽרָה׃ [1] Silluq

in the land, [2]
 
in addition to [3]
the first famine [2]
 
that was [2]
in the days of Abraham; [1]
 
and Isaac went [3]
to Abimelech king of the Philistines, [2]
to Gerar. [1]
2 וַיֵּרָ֤א אֵלָיו֙ [3] Pashta
יְהֹוָ֔ה [2] Zaqef
 
וַיֹּ֖אמֶר [2] Tip'cha
אַל־תֵּרֵ֣ד מִצְרָ֑יְמָה [1] Etnachta
 
שְׁכֹ֣ן בָּאָ֔רֶץ [2] Zaqef
אֲשֶׁ֖ר [2] Tip'cha
אֹמַ֥ר אֵלֶֽיךָ׃ [1] Silluq

the LORD, [2]
 
and he said, [2]
“Don’t go down into Egypt. [1]
 
Live in the land [2]
which [2]
I will tell you about. [1]
3 גּ֚וּר [3] Yetiv
בָּאָ֣רֶץ הַזֹּ֔את [2] Zaqef
 
וְאֶֽהְיֶ֥ה עִמְּךָ֖ [2] Tip'cha
וַאֲבָרְכֶ֑ךָּ [1] Etnachta
 
כִּֽי־לְךָ֣ וּֽלְזַרְעֲךָ֗ [3] Revi'i
אֶתֵּן֙ [3] Pashta
אֶת־כׇּל־הָֽאֲרָצֹ֣ת הָאֵ֔ל [2] Zaqef
 
וַהֲקִֽמֹתִי֙ [3] Pashta
אֶת־הַשְּׁבֻעָ֔ה [2] Zaqef
 
אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִשְׁבַּ֖עְתִּי [2] Tip'cha
לְאַבְרָהָ֥ם אָבִֽיךָ׃ [1] Silluq

and I will be with you [2]
and I will bless you; [1]
 
for to you and to your offspring [3]
I will give [3]
all these lands, [2]
 
and I will establish [3]
the oath [2]
 
which I swore [2]
to Abraham your father. [1]
4 וְהִרְבֵּיתִ֤י אֶֽת־זַרְעֲךָ֙ [3] Pashta
כְּכוֹכְבֵ֣י הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם [2] Zaqef
 
וְנָתַתִּ֣י לְזַרְעֲךָ֔ [2] Zaqef
אֵ֥ת כׇּל־הָאֲרָצֹ֖ת [2] Tip'cha
הָאֵ֑ל [1] Etnachta
 
וְהִתְבָּרְכ֣וּ בְזַרְעֲךָ֔ [2] Zaqef
כֹּ֖ל [2] Tip'cha
גּוֹיֵ֥י הָאָֽרֶץ׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 3 2 2 2 2 4 And I will multiply your offspring [3]
like the stars of the sky, [2]
 
and I will give to your offspring [2]
all the lands [2]
these; [1]
 
and they will be blessed by your offspring, [2]
all [2]
the nations of the earth, [1]

אֲשֶׁר־שָׁמַ֥ע אַבְרָהָ֖ם [2] Tip'cha
בְּקֹלִ֑י [1] Etnachta
 
וַיִּשְׁמֹר֙ [3] Pashta
מִשְׁמַרְתִּ֔י [2] Zaqef
 
מִצְוֺתַ֖י [2] Tip'cha
חֻקּוֹתַ֥י וְתוֹרֹתָֽי׃ [1] Silluq

that Abraham listened [2]
to my voice; [1]
 
and he kept [3]
my requirements, [2]
 
my commandments, [2]
my statutes and my laws.” [1]
6 וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב יִצְחָ֖ק [2] Tip'cha
בִּגְרָֽר׃ [1] Silluq
2 6 And Isaac stayed [2]
in Gerar. [1]
7 וַֽיִּשְׁאֲל֞וּ [4] Gershayim
אַנְשֵׁ֤י הַמָּקוֹם֙ [3] Pashta
לְאִשְׁתּ֔וֹ [2] Zaqef
 
וַיֹּ֖אמֶר [2] Tip'cha
אֲחֹ֣תִי הִ֑וא [1] Etnachta
 
כִּ֤י יָרֵא֙ [3] Pashta
לֵאמֹ֣ר אִשְׁתִּ֔י [2] Zaqef
 
פֶּן־יַֽהַרְגֻ֜נִי [4] Geresh
אַנְשֵׁ֤י הַמָּקוֹם֙ [3] Pashta
עַל־רִבְקָ֔ה [2] Zaqef
 
כִּֽי־טוֹבַ֥ת מַרְאֶ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
הִֽוא׃ [1] Silluq

about his wife, [2]
 
and he said, [2]
“She is my sister,” [1]
 
for he was afraid [3]
to say, “My wife”, [2]
 
lest, he thought, “they should kill me [4]
the men of the place, [3]
for Rebekah, [2]
 
because beautiful to look at [2]
is she.” [1]

king of the Philistines, [2]

and behold, Isaac [3]
was caressing [2]

Rebekah his wife. [1]

אַ֣ךְ הִנֵּ֤ה אִשְׁתְּךָ֙ [3] Pashta

וְאֵ֥יךְ אָמַ֖רְתָּ [2] Tip'cha
אֲחֹ֣תִי הִ֑וא [1] Etnachta
 
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ [3] Pashta

כִּ֣י אָמַ֔רְתִּי [2] Zaqef
פֶּן־אָמ֖וּת [2] Tip'cha
עָלֶֽיהָ׃ [1] Silluq

“Behold, surely your wife [3]
she is. [2]
 
Why did you say, [2]
‘She is my sister?’ ” [1]

“Because I thought, [2]
‘Lest I should die [2]
because of her.’ ” [1]
10 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ [2] Zaqef

עָשִׂ֣יתָ לָּ֑נוּ [1] Etnachta
 
כִּ֠מְעַ֠ט [4 4] TelishaG

אֶת־אִשְׁתֶּ֔ךָ [2] Zaqef
 
וְהֵבֵאתָ֥ עָלֵ֖ינוּ [2] Tip'cha
אָשָֽׁם׃ [1] Silluq

“What is this [2]
you have done to us? [1]
 
Easily [4 4]
he might have lain, [4]
one of the people, [3]
with your wife, [2]
 
and you would have brought on us [2]
guilt!” [1]
11 וַיְצַ֣ו אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ [2] Zaqef
אֶת־כׇּל־הָעָ֖ם [2] Tip'cha
לֵאמֹ֑ר [1] Etnachta
 
הַנֹּגֵ֜עַ [4] Geresh
בָּאִ֥ישׁ הַזֶּ֛ה [3] Tevir
וּבְאִשְׁתּ֖וֹ [2] Tip'cha
מ֥וֹת יוּמָֽת׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 2 2 3 4 11 And Abimelech commanded [2]
all the people, [2]
saying; [1]
 
“He who touches [4]
this man [3]
or his wife [2]
will surely be put to death.” [1]
12 וַיִּזְרַ֤ע יִצְחָק֙ [3] Pashta
בָּאָ֣רֶץ הַהִ֔וא [2] Zaqef
 
וַיִּמְצָ֛א [3] Tevir
בַּשָּׁנָ֥ה הַהִ֖וא [2] Tip'cha
מֵאָ֣ה שְׁעָרִ֑ים [1] Etnachta
 
וַֽיְבָרְכֵ֖הוּ [2] Tip'cha
יְהֹוָֽה׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 3 2 3 2 12 And Isaac sowed [3]
in that land, [2]
 
and he reaped [3]
in that year [2]
one hundred times as much; [1]
 
and he blessed him, [2]
the LORD. [1]
13 וַיִּגְדַּ֖ל [2] Tip'cha
הָאִ֑ישׁ [1] Etnachta
 
וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ הָלוֹךְ֙ [3] Pashta
וְגָדֵ֔ל [2] Zaqef
 
עַ֥ד כִּֽי־גָדַ֖ל [2] Tip'cha
מְאֹֽד׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 2 3 2 13 And he grew great, [2]
the man; [1]
 
and he grew more [3]
and more great, [2]
 
until he became great [2]
very. [1]
14 וַֽיְהִי־ל֤וֹ מִקְנֵה־צֹאן֙ [3] Pashta
וּמִקְנֵ֣ה בָקָ֔ר [2] Zaqef
 
וַעֲבֻדָּ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
רַבָּ֑ה [1] Etnachta
 
וַיְקַנְא֥וּ אֹת֖וֹ [2] Tip'cha
פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ [1] Silluq

and herds of cattle, [2]
 
and servants [2]
many; [1]
 
and they envied him, [2]
the Philistines. [1]
15 וְכׇל־הַבְּאֵרֹ֗ת [3] Revi'i
אֲשֶׁ֤ר חָֽפְרוּ֙ [3] Pashta
עַבְדֵ֣י אָבִ֔יו [2] Zaqef
 
בִּימֵ֖י [2] Tip'cha
אַבְרָהָ֣ם אָבִ֑יו [1] Etnachta
 
סִתְּמ֣וּם פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים [2] Zaqef
וַיְמַלְא֖וּם [2] Tip'cha
עָפָֽר׃ [1] Silluq

which they had dug, [3]
the servants of his father, [2]
 
in the days [2]
of Abraham his father; [1]
 
the Philistines had stopped them up, [2]
and they filled them [2]
with earth. [1]
16 וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ [2] Tip'cha
אֶל־יִצְחָ֑ק [1] Etnachta
 
לֵ֚ךְ [3] Yetiv
מֵֽעִמָּ֔נוּ [2] Zaqef
 
כִּֽי־עָצַ֥מְתָּ מִמֶּ֖נּוּ [2] Tip'cha
מְאֹֽד׃ [1] Silluq

to Isaac; [1]
 
“Go [3]
away from us, [2]
 
for you have become too powerful for us, [2]
much.” [1]
17 וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ מִשָּׁ֖ם [2] Tip'cha
יִצְחָ֑ק [1] Etnachta
 
וַיִּ֥חַן בְּנַֽחַל־גְּרָ֖ר [2] Tip'cha
וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב שָֽׁם׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 2 17 And he departed from there, [2]
Isaac; [1]
 
and he encamped in the valley of Gerar [2]
and he lived there. [1]
18 וַיָּ֨שׇׁב יִצְחָ֜ק [4] Geresh
וַיַּחְפֹּ֣ר ׀ [4] Legarmeh
אֶת־בְּאֵרֹ֣ת הַמַּ֗יִם [3] Revi'i
 
אֲשֶׁ֤ר חָֽפְרוּ֙ [3] Pashta
בִּימֵי֙ [3] Pashta
אַבְרָהָ֣ם אָבִ֔יו [2] Zaqef
 
וַיְסַתְּמ֣וּם פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים [2] Zaqef
אַחֲרֵ֖י [2] Tip'cha
מ֣וֹת אַבְרָהָ֑ם [1] Etnachta
 
וַיִּקְרָ֤א לָהֶן֙ [3] Pashta
שֵׁמ֔וֹת [2] Zaqef
 
כַּשֵּׁמֹ֕ת [2] ZaqefG
אֲשֶׁר־קָרָ֥א לָהֶ֖ן [2] Tip'cha
אָבִֽיו׃ [1] Silluq

the wells of water [3]
 
which they had dug [3]
in the days [3]
of Abraham his father, [2]
 
and the Philistines had stopped them up [2]
after [2]
the death of Abraham; [1]
 
and he called them [3]
names, [2]
 
like the names [2]
which he had called them, [2]
his father. [1]
19 וַיַּחְפְּר֥וּ עַבְדֵֽי־יִצְחָ֖ק [2] Tip'cha
בַּנָּ֑חַל [1] Etnachta
 
וַיִּ֨מְצְאוּ־שָׁ֔ם [2] Zaqef
בְּאֵ֖ר [2] Tip'cha
מַ֥יִם חַיִּֽים׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 2 2 19 And the servants of Isaac dug [2]
in the valley; [1]
 
and they found there [2]
a well [2]
of flowing water. [1]
20 וַיָּרִ֜יבוּ [4] Geresh
רֹעֵ֣י גְרָ֗ר [3] Revi'i
 
עִם־רֹעֵ֥י יִצְחָ֛ק [3] Tevir
לֵאמֹ֖ר [2] Tip'cha
 
לָ֣נוּ הַמָּ֑יִם [1] Etnachta
 
וַיִּקְרָ֤א שֵֽׁם־הַבְּאֵר֙ [3] Pashta
עֵ֔שֶׂק [2] Zaqef
 
כִּ֥י הִֽתְעַשְּׂק֖וּ [2] Tip'cha
עִמּֽוֹ׃ [1] Silluq

the herdsmen of Gerar, [3]
 
with the herdsmen of Isaac [3]
saying, [2]
 
“The water is ours.” [1]
 
And he called the name of the well [3]
Esek, [2]
 
because they contended [2]
with him. [1]
21 וַֽיַּחְפְּרוּ֙ [3] Pashta
בְּאֵ֣ר אַחֶ֔רֶת [2] Zaqef
 
וַיָּרִ֖יבוּ [2] Tip'cha
גַּם־עָלֶ֑יהָ [1] Etnachta
 
וַיִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמָ֖הּ [2] Tip'cha
שִׂטְנָֽה׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 3 2 2 21 And they dug [3]
another well, [2]
 
and they argued [2]
also over that; [1]
 
and he called its name [2]
Sitnah. [1]
22 וַיַּעְתֵּ֣ק מִשָּׁ֗ם [3] Revi'i
וַיַּחְפֹּר֙ [3] Pashta
בְּאֵ֣ר אַחֶ֔רֶת [2] Zaqef
 
וְלֹ֥א רָב֖וּ [2] Tip'cha
עָלֶ֑יהָ [1] Etnachta
 
וַיִּקְרָ֤א שְׁמָהּ֙ [3] Pashta
רְחֹב֔וֹת [2] Zaqef
 
וַיֹּ֗אמֶר [3] Revi'i
 
כִּֽי־עַתָּ֞ה [4] Gershayim
הִרְחִ֧יב יְהֹוָ֛ה [3] Tevir
לָ֖נוּ [2] Tip'cha
 
וּפָרִ֥ינוּ בָאָֽרֶץ׃ [1] Silluq

and he dug [3]
another well, [2]
 
and they didn’t argue [2]
over that one; [1]
 
and he called its name [3]
Rehoboth, [2]
 
and he said, [3]
 
“For now [4]
the LORD has made room [3]
for us, [2]
 
and we will be fruitful in the land.” [1]
23 וַיַּ֥עַל מִשָּׁ֖ם [2] Tip'cha
בְּאֵ֥ר שָֽׁבַע׃ [1] Silluq
2 23 And he went up from there to [2]
Beersheba. [1]
24 וַיֵּרָ֨א אֵלָ֤יו יְהֹוָה֙ [3] Pashta
בַּלַּ֣יְלָה הַה֔וּא [2] Zaqef
 
וַיֹּ֕אמֶר [2] ZaqefG
אָנֹכִ֕י [2] ZaqefG
אֱלֹהֵ֖י [2] Tip'cha
אַבְרָהָ֣ם אָבִ֑יךָ [1] Etnachta
 
אַל־תִּירָא֙ [3] Pashta
כִּֽי־אִתְּךָ֣ אָנֹ֔כִי [2] Zaqef
 
וּבֵֽרַכְתִּ֙יךָ֙ [3 3] Pashta
וְהִרְבֵּיתִ֣י אֶֽת־זַרְעֲךָ֔ [2] Zaqef
 
בַּעֲב֖וּר [2] Tip'cha
אַבְרָהָ֥ם עַבְדִּֽי׃ [1] Silluq

the same night, [2]
 
and he said, [2]
“I [2]
am the God [2]
of Abraham your father. [1]
 
Don’t be afraid [3]
for I am with you, [2]
 
and I will bless you [3 3]
and I will multiply your offspring, [2]
 
because of [2]
Abraham my servant.” [1]
25 וַיִּ֧בֶן שָׁ֣ם מִזְבֵּ֗חַ [3] Revi'i
וַיִּקְרָא֙ [3] Pashta
בְּשֵׁ֣ם יְהֹוָ֔ה [2] Zaqef
 
וַיֶּט־שָׁ֖ם [2] Tip'cha
אׇהֳל֑וֹ [1] Etnachta
 
וַיִּכְרוּ־שָׁ֥ם עַבְדֵי־יִצְחָ֖ק [2] Tip'cha
בְּאֵֽר׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 3 3 2 2 25 And he built an altar there, [3]
and he called [3]
on the name of the LORD, [2]
 
and there he pitched [2]
his tent; [1]
 
and there the servants of Isaac dug [2]
a well. [1]
26 וַאֲבִימֶ֕לֶךְ [2] ZaqefG
הָלַ֥ךְ אֵלָ֖יו [2] Tip'cha
מִגְּרָ֑ר [1] Etnachta
 
וַאֲחֻזַּת֙ [3] Pashta
מֵֽרֵעֵ֔הוּ [2] Zaqef
 
וּפִיכֹ֖ל [2] Tip'cha
שַׂר־צְבָאֽוֹ׃ [1] Silluq

he came to him [2]
from Gerar; [1]
 
and Ahuzzath [3]
his close friend, [2]
 
and Phicol [2]
the captain of his army. [1]
27 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵהֶם֙ [3] Pashta
יִצְחָ֔ק [2] Zaqef
 
מַדּ֖וּעַ [2] Tip'cha
בָּאתֶ֣ם אֵלָ֑י [1] Etnachta
 
וְאַתֶּם֙ [3] Pashta
שְׂנֵאתֶ֣ם אֹתִ֔י [2] Zaqef
 
וַתְּשַׁלְּח֖וּנִי [2] Tip'cha
מֵאִתְּכֶֽם׃ [1] Silluq

Isaac, [2]
 
“Why [2]
have you come to me; [1]
 
since you [3]
you hate me, [2]
 
and have sent me away [2]
from you?” [1]
28 וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ [3] Revi'i
רָא֣וֹ רָאִ֘ינוּ֮ [3 3] Zarqa
כִּֽי־הָיָ֣ה יְהֹוָ֣ה ׀ עִמָּךְ֒ [2] Segol
 
וַנֹּ֗אמֶר [3] Revi'i
תְּהִ֨י נָ֥א אָלָ֛ה [3] Tevir
בֵּינוֹתֵ֖ינוּ [2] Tip'cha
בֵּינֵ֣ינוּ וּבֵינֶ֑ךָ [1] Etnachta
 
וְנִכְרְתָ֥ה בְרִ֖ית [2] Tip'cha
עִמָּֽךְ׃ [1] Silluq

“We have seen clearly [3 3]
that the LORD has been with you, [2]
 
and we said, [3]
‘Let there now be an oath [3]
between us, [2]
between us and you; [1]
 
and let us make a covenant [2]
with you, [1]
29 אִם־תַּעֲשֵׂ֨ה עִמָּ֜נוּ [4] Geresh

כַּאֲשֶׁר֙ [3] Pashta
לֹ֣א נְגַֽעֲנ֔וּךָ [2] Zaqef
 
וְכַאֲשֶׁ֨ר עָשִׂ֤ינוּ עִמְּךָ֙ [3] Pashta
רַק־ט֔וֹב [2] Zaqef
 
וַנְּשַׁלֵּֽחֲךָ֖ [2] Tip'cha
בְּשָׁל֑וֹם [1] Etnachta
 
אַתָּ֥ה עַתָּ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
בְּר֥וּךְ יְהֹוָֽה׃ [1] Silluq

harm, [3]
 
just as [3]
we have not touched you, [2]
 
and just as we have done to you [3]
only good, [2]
 
and we sent you away [2]
in peace.’ [1]

blessed of the LORD.” [1]
30 וַיַּ֤עַשׂ לָהֶם֙ [3] Pashta
מִשְׁתֶּ֔ה [2] Zaqef
 
וַיֹּאכְל֖וּ [2] Tip'cha
וַיִּשְׁתּֽוּ׃ [1] Silluq
2 3 2 30 And he made for them [3]
a feast, [2]
 
and they ate [2]
and they drank. [1]
31 וַיַּשְׁכִּ֣ימוּ בַבֹּ֔קֶר [2] Zaqef

וַיְשַׁלְּחֵ֣ם יִצְחָ֔ק [2] Zaqef
וַיֵּלְכ֥וּ מֵאִתּ֖וֹ [2] Tip'cha
בְּשָׁלֽוֹם׃ [1] Silluq

and they swore an oath [2]
to one another; [1]
 
and Isaac sent them away, [2]
and they departed from him [2]
in peace. [1]

וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ [3 3] Pashta
עַבְדֵ֣י יִצְחָ֔ק [2] Zaqef
 
וַיַּגִּ֣דוּ ל֔וֹ [2] Zaqef
עַל־אֹד֥וֹת הַבְּאֵ֖ר [2] Tip'cha

וַיֹּ֥אמְרוּ ל֖וֹ [2] Tip'cha
מָצָ֥אנוּ מָֽיִם׃ [1] Silluq

שִׁבְעָ֑ה [1] Etnachta
 
עַל־כֵּ֤ן שֵׁם־הָעִיר֙ [3] Pashta
בְּאֵ֣ר שֶׁ֔בַע [2] Zaqef
 
עַ֖ד [2] Tip'cha
הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃ [1] Silluq

“Shibah,” [1]
 
therefore the name of the city [3]
is “Beersheba” [2]
