1 וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֨ם לָבָ֜ן [4] Geresh
בַּבֹּ֗קֶר [3] Revi'i
 
וַיְנַשֵּׁ֧ק לְבָנָ֛יו [3] Tevir
וְלִבְנוֹתָ֖יו [2] Tip'cha
 
וַיְבָ֣רֶךְ אֶתְהֶ֑ם [1] Etnachta
 
וַיֵּ֛לֶךְ [3] Tevir
וַיָּ֥שׇׁב לָבָ֖ן [2] Tip'cha
לִמְקֹמֽוֹ׃ [1] Silluq

in the morning, [3]
 
and he kissed his sons [3]
and his daughters, [2]
 
and he blessed them; [1]
 
and he departed [3]
and he returned, Laban [2]
to his place. [1]
2 וְיַעֲקֹ֖ב [2] Tip'cha
הָלַ֣ךְ לְדַרְכּ֑וֹ [1] Etnachta
 
וַיִּפְגְּעוּ־ב֖וֹ [2] Tip'cha
מַלְאֲכֵ֥י אֱלֹהִֽים׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 2 1 And Jacob, [2]
he went on his way; [1]
 
and they met him, [2]
the angels of God. [1]
3 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יַעֲקֹב֙ [3] Pashta
כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר רָאָ֔ם [2] Zaqef
 
מַחֲנֵ֥ה אֱלֹהִ֖ים [2] Tip'cha
זֶ֑ה [1] Etnachta
 
וַיִּקְרָ֛א [3] Tevir
שֵֽׁם־הַמָּק֥וֹם הַה֖וּא [2] Tip'cha
מַֽחֲנָֽיִם׃ [1] Silluq

when he saw them, [2]
 
“The camp of God [2]
this is.” [1]
 
And he called [3]
the name of that place [2]
Mahanaim. [1]
4 וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח יַעֲקֹ֤ב מַלְאָכִים֙ [3] Pashta
לְפָנָ֔יו [2] Zaqef
 
אֶל־עֵשָׂ֖ו [2] Tip'cha
אָחִ֑יו [1] Etnachta
 
אַ֥רְצָה שֵׂעִ֖יר [2] Tip'cha
שְׂדֵ֥ה אֱדֽוֹם׃ [1] Silluq

before him [2]
 
to Esau [2]
his brother; [1]
 
to the land of Seir, [2]
the field of Edom. [1]
5 וַיְצַ֤ו אֹתָם֙ [3] Pashta
לֵאמֹ֔ר [2] Zaqef
 
כֹּ֣ה תֹאמְר֔וּן [2] Zaqef
לַֽאדֹנִ֖י [2] Tip'cha
לְעֵשָׂ֑ו [1] Etnachta
 
כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ [3] Pashta
עַבְדְּךָ֣ יַעֲקֹ֔ב [2] Zaqef
 
עִם־לָבָ֣ן גַּ֔רְתִּי [2] Zaqef
וָאֵחַ֖ר [2] Tip'cha
עַד־עָֽתָּה׃ [1] Silluq

saying, [2]
 
“This is what you shall say, [2]
to my lord, [2]
to Esau; [1]
 
‘This is what he says, [3]
your servant Jacob. [2]
 
With Laban I have sojourned, [2]
and I have stayed [2]
until now. [1]
6 וַֽיְהִי־לִי֙ [3] Pashta
שׁ֣וֹר וַחֲמ֔וֹר [2] Zaqef
 
צֹ֖אן [2] Tip'cha
וְעֶ֣בֶד וְשִׁפְחָ֑ה [1] Etnachta
 
וָֽאֶשְׁלְחָה֙ [3] Pashta
לְהַגִּ֣יד לַֽאדֹנִ֔י [2] Zaqef
 
לִמְצֹא־חֵ֖ן [2] Tip'cha
בְּעֵינֶֽיךָ׃ [1] Silluq

oxen and donkeys, [2]
 
flocks [2]
and male servants and female servants; [1]
 
and I have sent [3]
to tell my lord, [2]
 
that I may find favor [2]
in your sight.’ ” [1]
7 וַיָּשֻׁ֙בוּ֙ [3 3] Pashta
הַמַּלְאָכִ֔ים [2] Zaqef
 
אֶֽל־יַעֲקֹ֖ב [2] Tip'cha
לֵאמֹ֑ר [1] Etnachta
 
בָּ֤אנוּ אֶל־אָחִ֙יךָ֙ [3 3] Pashta
אֶל־עֵשָׂ֔ו [2] Zaqef
 
וְגַם֙ [3] Pashta
הֹלֵ֣ךְ לִקְרָֽאתְךָ֔ [2] Zaqef
 
וְאַרְבַּע־מֵא֥וֹת אִ֖ישׁ [2] Tip'cha
עִמּֽוֹ׃ [1] Silluq

the messengers [2]
 
to Jacob [2]
saying; [1]
 
“We went to your brother, [3 3]
to Esau, [2]
 
and also [3]
he is coming to meet you, [2]
 
and four hundred men [2]
are with him.” [1]
8 וַיִּירָ֧א יַעֲקֹ֛ב [3] Tevir
מְאֹ֖ד [2] Tip'cha
וַיֵּ֣צֶר ל֑וֹ [1] Etnachta
 
וַיַּ֜חַץ [4] Geresh
אֶת־הָעָ֣ם אֲשֶׁר־אִתּ֗וֹ [3] Revi'i
 
וְאֶת־הַצֹּ֧אן וְאֶת־הַבָּקָ֛ר [3] Tevir
וְהַגְּמַלִּ֖ים [2] Tip'cha
 
לִשְׁנֵ֥י מַחֲנֽוֹת׃ [1] Silluq

greatly, [2]
and he was distressed; [1]
 
and he divided [4]
the people who were with him, [3]
 
and the flocks and the herds [3]
and the camels, [2]
 
into two companies, [1]
9 וַיֹּ֕אמֶר [2] ZaqefG
 
אִם־יָב֥וֹא עֵשָׂ֛ו [3] Tevir
אֶל־הַמַּחֲנֶ֥ה הָאַחַ֖ת [2] Tip'cha
וְהִכָּ֑הוּ [1] Etnachta
 
וְהָיָ֛ה [3] Tevir
הַמַּחֲנֶ֥ה הַנִּשְׁאָ֖ר [2] Tip'cha
לִפְלֵיטָֽה׃ [1] Silluq

“If Esau comes [3]
to the one company [2]
and he attacks it; [1]
 
then it will be that [3]
the remaining company [2]
will escape.” [1]

אֱלֹהֵי֙ [3] Pashta
אָבִ֣י אַבְרָהָ֔ם [2] Zaqef

יְהֹוָ֞ה [4] Gershayim
הָאֹמֵ֣ר אֵלַ֗י [3] Revi'i
 
שׁ֧וּב לְאַרְצְךָ֛ [3] Tevir
וּלְמוֹלַדְתְּךָ֖ [2] Tip'cha
 
וְאֵיטִ֥יבָה עִמָּֽךְ׃ [1] Silluq

“God [3]
of my father Abraham, [2]
 
and God [2]
of my father Isaac; [1]
 
Oh LORD, [4]
who said to me, [3]
 
‘Return to your country [3]
and to your relatives, [2]
 
and I will do good to you,’ [1]

וּמִכׇּל־הָ֣אֱמֶ֔ת [2] Zaqef
 
אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשִׂ֖יתָ [2] Tip'cha
אֶת־עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ [1] Etnachta
 
כִּ֣י בְמַקְלִ֗י [3] Revi'i
עָבַ֙רְתִּי֙ [3 3] Pashta
אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּ֣ן הַזֶּ֔ה [2] Zaqef
 
וְעַתָּ֥ה הָיִ֖יתִי [2] Tip'cha
לִשְׁנֵ֥י מַחֲנֽוֹת׃ [1] Silluq

of all the lovingkindness [3]
and of all the faithfulness [2]
 
which you have shown [2]
to your servant; [1]
 
for with just my staff [3]
I crossed over [3 3]
this Jordan, [2]

12 הַצִּילֵ֥נִי נָ֛א [3] Tevir
מִיַּ֥ד אָחִ֖י [2] Tip'cha
מִיַּ֣ד עֵשָׂ֑ו [1] Etnachta
 
כִּֽי־יָרֵ֤א אָנֹכִי֙ [3] Pashta
אֹת֔וֹ [2] Zaqef
 
פֶּן־יָב֣וֹא וְהִכַּ֔נִי [2] Zaqef
אֵ֖ם [2] Tip'cha
עַל־בָּנִֽים׃ [1] Silluq

from the hand of my brother, [2]
from the hand of Esau; [1]
 
for I fear [3]
him, [2]
 
lest he come and attack me, [2]
mother [2]
with children. [1]
13 וְאַתָּ֣ה אָמַ֔רְתָּ [2] Zaqef
הֵיטֵ֥ב אֵיטִ֖יב [2] Tip'cha
עִמָּ֑ךְ [1] Etnachta
 
וְשַׂמְתִּ֤י אֶֽת־זַרְעֲךָ֙ [3] Pashta
כְּח֣וֹל הַיָּ֔ם [2] Zaqef
 
אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־יִסָּפֵ֖ר [2] Tip'cha
מֵרֹֽב׃ [1] Silluq

‘I will surely do good [2]
to you; [1]
 
and I will make your offspring [3]
like the sand of the sea, [2]
 
which can’t be counted [2]
for multitude.’ ” [1]

מִן־הַבָּ֧א בְיָד֛וֹ [3] Tevir

לְעֵשָׂ֥ו אָחִֽיו׃ [1] Silluq

that night; [1]
 
and he took [4]
from that which he had with him [3]
a gift, [2]
for Esau his brother, [1]

רְחֵלִ֥ים מָאתַ֖יִם [2] Tip'cha
וְאֵילִ֥ים עֶשְׂרִֽים׃ [1] Silluq

and rams twenty, [1]

בְּיַד־עֲבָדָ֔יו [2] Zaqef
 
עֵ֥דֶר עֵ֖דֶר [2] Tip'cha
לְבַדּ֑וֹ [1] Etnachta
 
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־עֲבָדָיו֙ [3] Pashta
עִבְר֣וּ לְפָנַ֔י [2] Zaqef
 
וְרֶ֣וַח תָּשִׂ֔ימוּ [2] Zaqef
בֵּ֥ין עֵ֖דֶר [2] Tip'cha
וּבֵ֥ין עֵֽדֶר׃ [1] Silluq

in the hands of his servants, [2]
 
herd by herd [2]
each by itself; [1]
 
and he said to his servants, [3]
“Pass over before me, [2]
 
and put a space [2]
between herd [2]
and herd.” [1]
18 וַיְצַ֥ו אֶת־הָרִאשׁ֖וֹן [2] Tip'cha

כִּ֣י יִֽפְגׇשְׁךָ֞ [4] Gershayim
עֵשָׂ֣ו אָחִ֗י [3] Revi'i
 
וּשְׁאֵֽלְךָ֙ [3] Pashta

לְמִי־אַ֙תָּה֙ [3 3] Pashta
וְאָ֣נָה תֵלֵ֔ךְ [2] Zaqef
 
וּלְמִ֖י [2] Tip'cha
אֵ֥לֶּה לְפָנֶֽיךָ׃ [1] Silluq

“When he meets you, [4]
Esau my brother, [3]
 
and he asks you [3]
saying, [2]
 
‘To whom do you belong? [3 3]
And where are you going? [2]
 
And to whom belong [2]
these before you?’ [1]
19 וְאָֽמַרְתָּ֙ [3] Pashta
לְעַבְדְּךָ֣ לְיַעֲקֹ֔ב [2] Zaqef
 
מִנְחָ֥ה הִוא֙ [3] Pashta
שְׁלוּחָ֔ה [2] Zaqef
 
לַֽאדֹנִ֖י [2] Tip'cha
לְעֵשָׂ֑ו [1] Etnachta
 
וְהִנֵּ֥ה גַם־ה֖וּא [2] Tip'cha
אַחֲרֵֽינוּ׃ [1] Silluq

it is a gift [3]

תְּדַבְּר֣וּן אֶל־עֵשָׂ֔ו [2] Zaqef

אֲכַפְּרָ֣ה פָנָ֗יו [3] Revi'i
 
בַּמִּנְחָה֙ [3] Pashta
הַהֹלֶ֣כֶת לְפָנָ֔י [2] Zaqef
 
וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵן֙ [3] Pashta
אֶרְאֶ֣ה פָנָ֔יו [2] Zaqef
 
אוּלַ֖י [2] Tip'cha
יִשָּׂ֥א פָנָֽי׃ [1] Silluq

‘Also [3]
behold [3]
your servant Jacob [2]
is behind us.’ ” [1]

“I will appease him [3]
 
with the gift [3]

I will see his face, [2]
 
perhaps [2]
he will accept me.” [1]
22 וַתַּעֲבֹ֥ר הַמִּנְחָ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
עַל־פָּנָ֑יו [1] Etnachta

לָ֥ן בַּלַּֽיְלָה־הַה֖וּא [2] Tip'cha
בַּֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃ [1] Silluq

before him; [1]
 
and he, [3]
he stayed that night [2]
in the camp. [1]
23 וַיָּ֣קׇם ׀ [4] Legarmeh
בַּלַּ֣יְלָה ה֗וּא [3] Revi'i
 
וַיִּקַּ֞ח [4] Gershayim
אֶת־שְׁתֵּ֤י נָשָׁיו֙ [3] Pashta
וְאֶת־שְׁתֵּ֣י שִׁפְחֹתָ֔יו [2] Zaqef
 
וְאֶת־אַחַ֥ד עָשָׂ֖ר [2] Tip'cha
יְלָדָ֑יו [1] Etnachta
 
וַֽיַּעֲבֹ֔ר [2] Zaqef
אֵ֖ת [2] Tip'cha
מַעֲבַ֥ר יַבֹּֽק׃ [1] Silluq

וַיַּֽעֲבִרֵ֖ם [2] Tip'cha
אֶת־הַנָּ֑חַל [1] Etnachta
 
וַֽיַּעֲבֵ֖ר [2] Tip'cha
אֶת־אֲשֶׁר־לֽוֹ׃ [1] Silluq

and he sent them over [2]
the stream; [1]
 
and he sent over [2]
that which he had. [1]
25 וַיִּוָּתֵ֥ר יַעֲקֹ֖ב [2] Tip'cha
לְבַדּ֑וֹ [1] Etnachta
 
וַיֵּאָבֵ֥ק אִישׁ֙ [3] Pashta
עִמּ֔וֹ [2] Zaqef
 
עַ֖ד [2] Tip'cha
עֲל֥וֹת הַשָּֽׁחַר׃ [1] Silluq

he alone; [1]
 
and a man wrestled [3]
with him [2]
 
until [2]
the breaking of the day. [1]
26 וַיַּ֗רְא [3] Revi'i
כִּ֣י לֹ֤א יָכֹל֙ [3] Pashta
ל֔וֹ [2] Zaqef
 
וַיִּגַּ֖ע [2] Tip'cha
בְּכַף־יְרֵכ֑וֹ [1] Etnachta
 
וַתֵּ֙קַע֙ [3 3] Pashta
כַּף־יֶ֣רֶךְ יַעֲקֹ֔ב [2] Zaqef
 
בְּהֵאָֽבְק֖וֹ [2] Tip'cha
עִמּֽוֹ׃ [1] Silluq

that he didn’t prevail [3]
against him, [2]
 
he touched [2]
the hollow of his thigh; [1]
 
and it was strained, [3 3]
the hollow of Jacob’s thigh [2]
 
as he wrestled [2]
with him. [1]
27 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שַׁלְּחֵ֔נִי [2] Zaqef
כִּ֥י עָלָ֖ה [2] Tip'cha
הַשָּׁ֑חַר [1] Etnachta
 
וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ [3 3] Pashta
לֹ֣א אֲשַֽׁלֵּחֲךָ֔ [2] Zaqef
 
כִּ֖י [2] Tip'cha
אִם־בֵּרַכְתָּֽנִי׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 2 2 3 2 26 And he said, “Let me go, [2]
for it is breaking, [2]
the dawn.” [1]
 
And Jacob said, [3 3]
“I won’t let you go [2]
 
unless [2]
you bless me.” [1]
28 וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֵלָ֖יו [2] Tip'cha
מַה־שְּׁמֶ֑ךָ [1] Etnachta
 
וַיֹּ֖אמֶר [2] Tip'cha
יַעֲקֹֽב׃ [1] Silluq
1 2 2 27 And he said to him, [2]
“What is your name?” [1]
 
And he said, [2]
“Jacob”. [1]
29 וַיֹּ֗אמֶר [3] Revi'i
לֹ֤א יַעֲקֹב֙ [3] Pashta
יֵאָמֵ֥ר עוֹד֙ [3] Pashta
שִׁמְךָ֔ [2] Zaqef
 
כִּ֖י [2] Tip'cha
אִם־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל [1] Etnachta
 
כִּֽי־שָׂרִ֧יתָ עִם־אֱלֹהִ֛ים [3] Tevir
וְעִם־אֲנָשִׁ֖ים [2] Tip'cha
וַתּוּכָֽל׃ [1] Silluq

“Not Jacob [3]
anymore will be [3]
your name, [2]
 
but [2]
Israel; [1]
 
for you have struggled with God [3]
and with men, [2]
and you have prevailed.” [1]

הַגִּֽידָה־נָּ֣א שְׁמֶ֔ךָ [2] Zaqef

תִּשְׁאַ֣ל לִשְׁמִ֑י [1] Etnachta
 
וַיְבָ֥רֶךְ אֹת֖וֹ [2] Tip'cha
שָֽׁם׃ [1] Silluq

and he said, [3 3]
“Please tell me your name.” [2]
 
And he said, [2]
“Why is it that [2]
you ask my name?” [1]
 
And he blessed him [2]
there. [1]
31 וַיִּקְרָ֧א יַעֲקֹ֛ב [3] Tevir
שֵׁ֥ם הַמָּק֖וֹם [2] Tip'cha
פְּנִיאֵ֑ל [1] Etnachta
 
כִּֽי־רָאִ֤יתִי אֱלֹהִים֙ [3] Pashta
פָּנִ֣ים אֶל־פָּנִ֔ים [2] Zaqef
 
וַתִּנָּצֵ֖ל [2] Tip'cha
נַפְשִֽׁי׃ [1] Silluq
