In this section, we intend to locate and review open file format standards for common Bible reference information. (If you're looking for actual data files, see the Bible Reference page.) For now, we just have a preliminary list:

Bible text

• USFM (Unified Standard Format Markers) for Bible text.
• USX (XML packaged USFM) for Bible text.
• OSIS (XML -- no longer officially maintained) for Bible text.
• USFX (XML packaged USFM from eBible.org) for Bible text.
• ESFM (Enhanced Standard Format Markers) for tagged Bible text.

Bible packages

• Scripture Burrito for Bible metadata.

Bible facts/databases (people/names, locations, events)

Bible tagging/markup

• Theological Markup Language (XML), although Freely-Given.org would recommend using Libre Office for editing rather than MS-Word.

Forums

• Technology.Bible standards track (not active since June 2018).
• Technology.Bible Scripture Burrito track (not active since May 2020).
