DefinitionShort: to cause to die on a cross a second time

        Glosses: to crucify again

Comments: In extrabiblical Greek ἀνασταυρόω is essentially equivalent in meaning to {L:σταυρόω} ({D:20.76}), but in {S:05800600600014} ἀνασταυρόω is used figuratively of believers whose sin causes Christ to be crucified again in the sense of exposing Christ to public shame by virtue of the misdeeds of his professed followers. Some scholars, however, interpret ἀνασταυρόω in {S:05800600600014} as referring simply to the original crucifixion and thus interpret ἀνασταυρόω as being essentially synonymous with {L:σταυρόω}.
