κηρίον

Form 1

Part of speech: noun, n.

Inflections: κηρίον; -ου

Sense 1: honeycomb

Semantic entry: 5.21

Semantic domains: Foods and Condiments

Subdomains: Food

Notes: This word is found as a variant reading only: οἱ δὲ ἐπέδωκαν αὐτῷ … ἀπὸ μελισσίου κηρίου ‘and they gave him … some honeycomb’ OET LUK 24:42 (apparatus); see 4.50: μελίσσιος. In rendering κηρίον it is important to employ an expression which will include both the honey and the comb. A literal rendering of ‘honeycomb’ might refer only to the wax container without the honey, but for many languages a term meaning simply ‘honey’ also refers to the honeycomb.
