ἀρχιποίμην

Strong’s: G750

Associated OET lemmas: ἀρχιποίμην

Notes: The occurrence of ἀρχιποίμην ‘chief shepherd’ in RV PE1 5:4 · LV PE1 5:4 · Read together PE1 5:4 is an excellent example of figurative usage. There is no indication that by the time 1 Peter was written ἀρχιποίμην had acquired the conventional meaning of a title designating Christ as one who had principal responsibility for believers. The meaning of ἀρχιποίμην, therefore, is simply ‘chief shepherd,’ but the reference is to Christ in a function which does not involve the literal care of sheep.
