ἀρτέμων

Strong’s: G736

Associated OET lemmas: ἀρτέμων

Form 1

Part of speech: noun, m.

Inflections: ἀρτέμων; -ωνος

Sense 1: sail

Semantic entry: 6.49

Semantic domains: Artifacts

Subdomains: Boats and Parts of Boats

Definition: a cloth attached above a boat in such a way as to catch the wind and thus propel the boat through the water

Notes: In OET ACT 27:40 (the only occurrence of ἀρτέμων in the NT) the reference may be to the foresail, that is, a relatively small sail toward the prow of the ship. A sail may be described in some languages as ‘a piece of cloth to make the ship move’ or ‘cloth on the ship to catch the wind.’
