CALLISTHENES

A Syrian in General Nicanor’s army who set fire to the temple gates during the persecution of the Jews by Antiochus Epiphanes (2 Macc 8:33). After Nicanor’s defeat in 165 BC, Callisthenes and others responsible for burning the sacred gates were burned to death by the Jews.
