κρανίον

Strong’s: G2898

Associated OET lemmas: κρανίον

Form 1

Part of speech: noun, n.

Inflections: κρανίον; -ου

Sense 1: skull (in the NT κρανίον is used only as a name for the hill of Golgotha).

Semantic entry: 8.11

Semantic domains: Body, Body Parts, and Body Products

Subdomains: Parts of the Body

Definition: the bony framework of the head, especially the upper portion

Notes: In rendering κρανίου τόπος ‘place of the skull’ it may be necessary to indicate clearly the relationship between place and skull. A literal rendering of such a phrase might simply mean ‘a place where there was a skull.’ However the meaning of Golgotha has been interpreted generally as ‘a hill resembling a skull’ and therefore κρανίου τόπος may be more satisfactorily rendered as ‘a place resembling a skull’ or ‘a hill looking like a skull.’ See 93.453: Γολγοθᾶ.
