κῶλον

Strong’s: G2966

Associated OET lemmas: κῶλον

Notes: In earlier Greek κῶλον designated a limb, but in the NT it occurs only in the plural and means corpses.

Form 1

Part of speech: noun, n.

Inflections: κῶλον; -ου

Sense 1: dead body, corpse

Semantic entry: 8.8

Semantic domains: Body, Body Parts, and Body Products

Subdomains: Body

Definition: the dead body of a person, especially one which is still unburied{N:001}

Notes: Though in OET HEB 3:17 the Greek text reads literally ‘whose dead bodies fell in the wilderness,’ it would normally be a mistake to translate this clause literally, since it might suggest that the people died while they were still standing, and that only the corpses fell. A more natural equivalent is ‘they died in the wilderness’ or ‘they died and their bodies lay in the wilderness.’
