ἐρεθίζω

Strong’s: G2042

Associated OET lemmas: ἐρεθίζω

Notes: In the case of RV CO2 9:2 · LV CO2 9:2 · Read together CO2 9:2 it is difficult to know precisely how much meaning to attach to ἐρεθίζω in the sense of ‘to encourage’ or ‘to motivate.’ It is possible that ἐρεθίζω retains in this context a considerable amount of its more common meaning (see 88.168: ἐρεθίζω). But in RV CO2 9:2 · LV CO2 9:2 · Read together CO2 9:2 it may also represent an instance in which the original meaning of a term has been largely lost or at least reduced to primarily a marker of causative relation. It appears likely that παροξυσμός in RV HEB 10:24 · LV HEB 10:24 · Read together HEB 10:24 has also been largely reduced to a marker of a causative relation, in other words, ‘to cause people to love and to do good,’ but since in this instance there seems to be some focus upon the psychological factors involved, one may translate παροξυσμός as ‘to encourage.’
