ἱερόθυτος

Strong’s: G1494a

Associated OET lemmas: εἰδωλόθυτος

Form 1

Part of speech: adjc.

Inflections: ἱερόθυτος; -ον

Constructions: ἱερόθυτος; ἱερατεύω; θύω

Sense 1: what has been sacrificed, having been sacrificed to a deity

Semantic entry: 53.21

Semantic domains: Religious Activities

Subdomains: Offering, Sacrifice

Definition: pertaining to being sacrificed to a deity

Notes: In some cultures sacrificing is not practiced, and even the idea of killing an animal as a gift to a deity seems not only strange but even abhorrent. In such languages no special term is to be found for sacrifice, and it may therefore be necessary to use a phrase such as ‘to kill an animal and give it to God’ or ‘to kill an animal in honor of God.’ In such cases, however, it is obviously necessary to have some kind of supplementary note or glossary statement which will attempt to explain the significance and function of sacrifice in the Bible.
