EBER

1. Abraham’s ancestor (Gn 10:21-25; 11:14-17; 1 Chr 1:18-25; Lk 3:35) from whom the word “Hebrew” may be derived. Eber lived 464 years and was the ancestor of the “sons of Eber,” a phrase possibly equal to the “Hebrews,” as “sons of Heth” equals the “Hittites” (Gn 23:10, nasb). However, the term “Hebrew” may be an indication of social class rather than of descent from Eber. Eber had a son in whose time the earth was divided, a division possibly into nomadic and sedentary groups.

2. Gadite leader registered during the reigns of Jothan, king of Judah (950–932 BC), and Jeroboam II, king of Israel (993–953 BC; 1 Chr 5:13, KJB “Heber”).

3. Benjamite and Elpaal’s descendant (1 Chr 8:12).

4. Benjamite and Shashak’s descendant (1 Chr 8:22).

5. Head of Amok’s priestly family during the days of the high priest Joiakim (Neh 12:20).
