TSNTyndale Study Notes:

3:14 What have we gained? The people assumed that righteous acts would result in material blessing (Deut 28).
• sorry for our sins: The idea was to parade mournfully or walk in funeral garb to demonstrate penitence, as though such acts were righteous in themselves (see Matt 6:1-18).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

and,what profit that/for/because/then/when keeping requirements,his and=because/when walking mourners from=face/in_front_of YHWH armies/angels

The people ask this question among themselves in order to make a statement. Alternate translation: “It is useless that we have kept his requirements and walked mournfully before Yahweh of hosts.”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

walking mourners from=face/in_front_of YHWH armies/angels

Here walked mournfully stands for “behaved in a sorrowful manner,” probably in order to indicate sorrow over their sins.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

from=face/in_front_of YHWH armies/angels

Here this expression refers to God being aware of what the people were doing.
