Paul’s concerns about their faith

This is still a very early look into the unfinished text of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check the text in advance before using in public.

Readers’ Version

Literal Version

4:8 Paul’s concerns about their faith

8When you didn’t know God, you served others who are not really gods at all. 9But now that you do know God, or rather than God now knows you, why would you turn back again to useless and inferior beliefs and to serve them all over again? 10You all observe special holidays and certain months and seasons and years. 11I worry that maybe I’ve wasted my time helping you all.

12I implore you all to become like me, brothers and sisters, because I’m also just like you. You haven’t wronged me in any way 13but you know that it was a result of my fleshly weakness that I originally preached the good message to you.[fn] 14Yet you didn’t mock or despise me for this trial of my flesh, but rather all of you received me as God’s messenger like you might have received the messiah Yeshua himself. 15So where are your generous attitudes now? I know that back then, you would have almost dug your own eyes out to give them to me. 16Have I now become your enemy just because I told you all the truth?

17Those others have worked hard to try to win you over but not for good reasons—they want to cut you off so that you’ll be enthusiastic about them. 18It’s good to be enthusiastic about things that are always good, and not only at the times when I’m with you all. 19My dear ones who I’m again labouring with in childbirth until the messiah becomes part of you, 20I wanted to be there with you all now and to speak quite differently than this because I’m puzzled about you.

4:13 Scholars are unclear whether this might mean something like ill health, poor eyesight (see v15), or even a moral weakness, so we’ve left it as ambiguous in the translation as it is in the original.

8But then on_one_hand not having_known god, you_all_served for_the ones by_nature not being gods, 9on_the_other_hand now having_known god, and rather having_been_known by god, how are_you_all_turning_back again to the weak and poor principles, for_which again you_all_are_wanting to_be_serving again?
?
10You_all_are_observing days, and months, and seasons, and years.
11I_am_fearing for_you_all, lest somehow I_have_laboured vainly for you_all.
12Be_becoming as I am, because also_I am as you_all are, brothers, I_am_beseeching of_you_all.
You_all_did_ nothing _wrong me, 13but you_all_have_known that because_of weakness of_the flesh, I_good_message_preached to_you_all the earlier.
14And you_all_ not _scorned the trial of_you_all in the flesh of_me, nor you_all_disdained, but as a_messenger of_god you_all_received me, as chosen_one/messiah Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa).
15Therefore is where the blessing of_you_all?
For/Because I_am_testifying to_you_all that if possible the eyes of_you_all having_dug_out, you_all_gave them to_me.
16So_as being_truthful to_you_all have_I_become enemy of_you_all,?
17They_are_being_zealous for_you_all not rightly, but they_are_willing to_exclude you_all, in_order_that you_all_may_be_being_zealous for_them.
18But it_is good to_be_being_zealous in a_good thing always, and not only in the time me to_be_being_present with you_all.
19Children of_me, whom again I_am_labouring_in_birth, until of_which chosen_one/messiah may_be_formed in you_all, 20but I_was_wanting to_be_being_present with you_all now, and to_change the voice of_me, because I_am_perplexing in you_all.
