The Death of John the Baptist

The Death of John the Baptist

14At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus 2and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he has been raised from the dead, and that is why these mighty powers are at work in him.” 3For Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife. 4For John had been saying to him, “It is not lawful for yoʋ to have her.” 5Although Herod wanted to kill John, he was afraid of the crowd, because they regarded John as a prophet. 6But when Herod's birthday [fn]was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before the guests and pleased Herod. 7So he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. 8Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” 9The king was grieved, but because of his oaths and his guests, he commanded it to be given 10and sent orders to have John beheaded in the prison. 11John's head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. 12Later, John's disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and brought word to Jesus.
