The question of fasting

Mark 2:18–22

Mat 9:14–17

Luke 5:33–39

2:18 The question of fasting

(Mat. 9:14-17, Luke 5:33-39)

18Now the followers of Yohan-the-Immerser and members of the Pharisees regularly fasted. So a small group came to Yeshua and asked, “How come Yohan’s followers and the Pharisee party fast regularly, yet your followers don’t?”

19And Yeshua answered, “Can the friends of the groom fast when they’re celebrating along with him? No, as long as he’s still there, they won’t be fasting. 20But in the future, the groom will be taken away from them, and then they’ll be fasting.

21No one sews a patch of new, unshrunken cloth onto an old garment, because the new patch will tear away from that old fabric and it will end up as a worse tear. 22And no one puts new wine into old wineskins, because the wine will burst the already stretched wineskins, and then both the wine and the wineskins will be destroyed. New wine must be put into new wineskins.

9:14 Yeshua is asked about fasting

(Mark 2:18-22, Luke 5:33-39)

14Then the disciples of Yohan approached Yeshua and said, “How come that we and the Pharisees fast regularly, but your disciples don’t fast?”

15And Yeshua replied to them, “Surely the groomsmen aren’t sad while the groom is with them? But the time will come when the groom has to leave them and then they will fast.

16No one patches old clothes with new material because the patch will shrink and the clothes would end up with a worse hole. 17And they don’t put new wine into an old container, otherwise the container could split and be ruined and the wine would be lost. Rather they put new wine into a new container and both survive.”

5:33 The question about fasting

(Mark 2:18-22, Mat. 9:14-17)

33Then the religious leaders complained, “Yohan’s followers often fast and bring their needs to God, as do the Pharisees, but your followers are eating and drinking.”

34You can’t make the best men fast at a wedding,Yeshua responded, “not while the groom is with them. 35But yes, there will be a future time when the groom will be taken away from them, and then they’ll fast.

36Then he went on to tell them this parable, “No one repairs their old clothes by putting on a patch of new material. If they did, the new patch will likely tear off again, plus it wouldn’t look right anyway. 37Similarly, no one puts new wine to mature into old wineskins. If they did, the new wine would certainly burst the old wineskin and it would all pour out and the wineskin would be ruined as well. 38New wine needs to be put into a new wineskin. 39And no one who’s used to the old ways wants the new, because he’ll claim that the old is good enough.
