The Crucifixion

The Crucifixion

So they took Jesus [fn]and led him away. 17Carrying [fn]his own cross, he went out to [fn]a location called the Place of the Skull (which in Hebrew is called Golgotha). 18There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on each side, with Jesus in the middle. 19Pilate also wrote a notice and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” 20Many of the Jews read this notice, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, [fn]Greek, and Latin. 21Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, “I am the king of the Jews.” ’ ” 22Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, a part for each soldier. They also took his tunic, which was seamless. It was woven in one piece from top to bottom, 24so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it apart, but cast lots for it to decide whose it will be.” This happened to fulfill the [fn]Scripture that says,

“They divided my garments among themselves,

and for my clothing they cast lots.”

This is what the soldiers did.

25Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, yoʋr son.” 27Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, yoʋr mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.
