The Book of Numbers 1

In the second month of the year after the Israelite people had left Egypt, Yahweh spoke to Moses while he was in the sacred tent, in the wilderness of Sinai. Yahweh said to him, 2“Count all the male Israelites by name. List them by their tribal groups and families. 3You and Aaron must count the men who are at least 20 years old and can be soldiers. List them by their army divisions. 4One man from each tribe will lead his tribe. These leaders will help you. 5Their names are: Elizur, the descendant of Shedeur from the tribe of Reuben, 6Shelumiel, the descendant of Zurishaddai from the tribe of Simeon, 7Nahshon, the descendant of Amminadab from the tribe of Judah, 8Nethanel, the descendant of Zuar from the tribe of Issachar, 9Eliab the descendant of Helon from the tribe of Zebulun, 10Elishama, the descendant of Ammihud from the tribe of Ephraim, Gamaliel, the descendant of Pedahzur from the tribe of Manasseh. (Ephraim and Manasseh were the descendants of Joseph.) 11Abidan, the descendant of Gideoni from the tribe of Benjamin, 12Ahiezer, the descendant of Ammishaddai from the tribe of Dan, 13Pagiel, the descendant of Okran from the tribe of Asher, 14Eliasaph, the descendant of Deuel from the tribe of Gad, 15and Ahira, the descendant of Enan from the tribe of Naphtali.” 16These men were those whom the community chose to lead their ancestral tribes. They led the Israelites tribal groups. 17Moses and Aaron summoned the men whom the community had chosen by name. 18They gathered all the whole Israelites community on that same day, and the men who were at least 20 years old announced the tribe from which they descended. They announced them by their tribal groups and families. 19Moses counted these men in the desert of Sinai. He did exactly what Yahweh ordered him to do.

-21 20-21Moses counted 46,500 descendants of Reuben who were at least 20 years old and could be soldiers. Reuben was Jacob’s oldest son. He listed Reuben’s descendants with the names of their tribal group and families.

-23 22-23Moses counted 59,300 descendants of Simeon who were at least 20 years old and could be soldiers. He listed themwith the names of their tribal group and families.

-25 24-25Moses counted 45,650 descendants of Gad who were at least 20 years old and could be soldiers. He listed them with the names of their tribal group and families.

-27 26-27Moses counted 74,600 descendants of Judah who were at least 20 years old and could be soldiers. He listed them with the names of their tribal group and families.

-29 28-29Moses counted 54,400 descendants of Issachar who were at least 20 years old and could be soldiers. He listed them with the names of their tribal group and families.

-31 30-31Moses counted 57,400 descendants of Zebulun who were at least 20 years old and could be soldiers. He listed them with the names of their tribal group and families.

-33 32-33Moses counted 40,500 descendants of Ephraim who were at least 20 years old and could be soldiers. Ephraim descended from Joseph. He listed Ephraim’s descendants with the names of their tribal group and families.

-35 34-35Moses counted 32,200 descendants of Manasseh who were at least 20 years old and could be soldiers. Manasseh descended from Joseph. He listed Manasseh’s descendants with the names of their tribal group and families.

-37 36-37Moses counted 35,400 descendants of Benjamin who were at least 20 years old and could be soldiers. He listed them with the names of their tribal group and families.

-39 38-39Moses counted 62,700 descendants of Dan who were at least 20 years old and could be soldiers. He listed them with the names of their tribal group and families.

-41 40-41Moses counted 41,500 descendants of Asher who were at least 20 years old and could be soldiers. He listed them with the names of their tribal group and families.

-43 42-43Moses counted 53,400 descendants of Naphtali who were at least 20 years old and could be soldiers. He listed them with the names of their tribal group and families.

Moses, Aaron, and the 12 leaders, one from each tribal group, counted these men. 45These men were Israelites whom Moses and Aaron counted by their families. These were the men who are at least 20 years old and could be soldiers. 46The total count was 603,550 men. 47However, Moses did not count the Levites by their ancestral tribe along with the other tribes.

Yahweh said to Moses, 49“You must not count the Levite tribe. Do not list them among the Israelites. 50Moses, order the Levites to manage the sacred tent and every object in it. They must carry the sacred tent and every object in it. They alone must serve in it and must camp around it. 51The Levites must disassemble it when the Israelites journey to another location, and the Levites must construct it when the Israelites stay in a location. If a person who is not an Israelite approaches the sacred tent, the Levites must kill him. 52Each Israelite must camp in his own campsite with its own tribal flag. They will camp by their army divisions. 53The Levites will camp around the sacred tent, so that Yahweh does not become angry with the Israelite community. The Levites must manage the sacred tent.” 54So the Israelites did exactly everything Yahweh ordered Moses to tell them to do.
