IRONSMITH*

An artisan who normally worked in iron (Is 44:12); a blacksmith. The first worker in iron recorded in the Bible is Tubal-cain (Gn 4:22). In Israel iron became widely known and used about the 11th century BC (Dt 3:11; Jos 6:19, 24 OET JOS 6:19 · OET JOS 6:24; 17:16; Jgs 1:19; 4:3, 13 OET JDG 4:3 · OET JDG 4:13).
