The fifth trumpet brings the first terror

This is still a very early look into the unfinished text of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check the text in advance before using in public.

Readers’ Version

Literal Version

9:1 The fifth trumpet brings the first terror

9Then the fifth messenger blew his trumpet and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth, and he/it[fn] was given the key to the deep, dark pit. 2When he/it unlocked and opened that pit, smoke came up out of it like the smoke of a large furnace, and the smoke darkened the sun and the air.[ref] 3Then locusts came out of the smoke and descended on the land, and they were given stinging power like the large scorpions of the earth.[ref] 4However the locusts were told that they shouldn’t harm the grass or any green plants or trees, but only those people who didn’t have God’s mark on their foreheads.[ref] 5They weren’t given power to kill them, but only to torment them for five months, and their torment was like that of a scorpion when it strikes a person. 6People in those days will try to die, but won’t be able to—they will long to die, but death will run away from them.[ref]

7The locusts looked like horses that had been prepared for battle, with something on their heads that were similar to golden crowns and their faces being like human faces.[ref] 8Their hair was like women’s hair and their teeth were like lions’ teeth.[ref] 9They wore chestplates that seemed to be made of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the roar of many horses rushing into battle pulling chariots.[ref] 10They had tails with stingers like scorpions which had the power to harm people for five months. 11They had a king in charge of them who’s the messenger of the deep pit—his name is ‘Destroyer’. (‘Abaddon’ in Hebrew and ‘Apollyon’ in Greek.)

12The first terrible event has now passed, but there are still two more to follow.

9:1 It’s ambiguous in the Greek whether the key was given to the messenger or the star, or possibly the falling star was the messenger.

9And the fifth messenger trumpeted, and I_saw a_star out_of the sky having_fallen to the earth, and was_given to_him the key of_the pit of_the abyss, 2and he_opened_up the pit of_the abyss, and went_up smoke out_of of_the pit, like the_smoke of_a_furnace great, and was_darkened the sun and the air by the smoke of_the pit.
3And out_of the smoke came_out locusts to the earth, and was_given to_them power, like are_having power the scorpions of_the earth.
4And it_was_said to_them that neither they_may_injure the grass of_the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, except not/lest the people who not are_having the seal of_ the _god on their foreheads.
5And it_was_given to_them, in_order_that not they_may_kill_off them, but in_order_that they_will_be_being_tormented five for_months, and the torment of_them is like torment of_a_scorpion, whenever it_may_strike a_person.
6And in the days those, will_be_seeking the people the death, and by_no_means not they_will_be_finding it, and they_will_be_desiring to_die_off, but is_fleeing the death from them.
7And the likenesses of_the locusts was similar to_horses having_been_prepared for war, and something on the heads of_them were like crowns similar to_gold, and the faces of_them like the_faces of_humans, 8and they_were_having hairs like the_hairs of_women, and the teeth of_them like of_lions were, 9and they_were_having breastplates like breastplates iron, and the sound of_the wings of_them as the_sound of_chariots of_horses many running into war, 10and they_are_having tails similar to_scorpions and stings, and in the tails of_them is the power of_them to_injure the people five for_months.
11They_are_having over themselves a_king, the messenger of_the abyss, the_name to_him In_Hebraios is, Abaddōn/(ʼAvadōn), and in the Hellaʸn he_is_having, the_name Apolluōn.
12The woe the one went_away, see, is_coming still two woes after these things.
