TSNTyndale Study Notes:

9:1-21 The fifth and sixth trumpets demonstrate how God’s judgment affects the people of the world and detail how futile it is to resist God. While these judgments should lead to repentance, they do not. Sin has such control over people that they choose to worship the evil forces that torture and murder them rather than repent and turn to God.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις

in ¬the days those

John is using the term days to refer to a specific time. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “at that time”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

ζητήσουσιν οἱ ἄνθρωποι τὸν θάνατον, καὶ οὐ μὴ εὑρήσουσιν αὐτόν, καὶ ἐπιθυμήσουσιν ἀποθανεῖν, καὶ φεύγει ὁ θάνατος ἀπ’ αὐτῶν

/will_be/_seeking ¬the people ¬the death and by_no_means not ˱they˲_/will_be/_finding it and ˱they˲_/will_be/_desiring /to/_die_off but /is/_fleeing ¬the death from them

These two phrases mean similar things. John is using repetition to emphasize the idea that the phrases express. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could combine the phrases. Alternate translation: “even though people will want very much to die, they will not be able to die”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

τὸν θάνατον

¬the death

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of death, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: “to die”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

φεύγει ὁ θάνατος ἀπ’ αὐτῶν

/is/_fleeing ¬the death from them

John is speaking figuratively of death as if it were a living thing that could run away or flee. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “they will not be able to die”
