The Book of Jeremiah 10

10“Hear the word that Yahweh spoke against you, O house of Israel.

2Thus says Yahweh, ‘Do not train upon the way of the nations,

and do not be dismayed from the signs of the heavens, for the nations are dismayed from them.

3For the customs of the people are vain,

for a tree from the forest they cut it down, the hands of a craftsman making with an axe.

4Then they decorate it with silver and gold. They strengthen it with hammers and nails, and it will not totter.

5They are like scarecrows of a cucumber field, and they do not speak, carrying, they are carried because they do not walk.

Do not fear from them, for they will not cause harm, and also there is not good with them.’”

6There is not one like you, Yahweh. You are great, and your name is great in power.

7Who does not fear you, king of the nations? For it is fitting to you,

for there is no one like you among all the wise of the nations and among all of their kingdoms.

8And with one they are stupid and foolish, the teaching of vain things of wood it is.

9Hammered silver from Tarshish was brought, and gold from Uphaz, the work of a craftsman,

and the hands of refiners. Their clothes are purple and reddish-purple cloth. The work of skilled ones are all of them.

10And Yahweh is the true God, he is the living God and eternal king.

The earth quakes from his anger, and the nations cannot endure his indignation.

11You will speak to them like this, “The gods that did not make the heavens and earth

will perish from the earth and from under these heavens.”

12the maker of the earth by his strength, the establisher of the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding he stretched out the heavens.

13Of the sound of his giving, tumult of waters in the heavens, and he brings up the mists from the ends of the earth,

he made the lightning for the rain, and sends out wind from his storehouse.

14Every man has become stupid from knowledge. Every metalworker is put to shame from his idols,

for his molten images are false, no spirit is in them.

15They are vain, the work of mockery; they will perish at the time of their visitation.

16Not like these is the portion of Jacob, for he is the molder of all things,

and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance. Yahweh of hosts is his name.

17Gather your bundle and leave the land, you dwellers in distress.

18For thus says Yahweh, “Behold, I am slinging the dwellers of the land at this time.

I will cause them distress in order that they will find.”

19Woe to me! Because of my breaking, my wound is severe,

and I said, “Surely this is affliction, and I will bear it.”

20My tent is devastated, and all of my cords are ripped apart.

My sons have gone out from me and they are not. There is not one spreading out my tent again, raising up my tent curtains.

21For the shepherds are stupid and they do not seek Yahweh,

because of this they have not prospered, and all their flock has been scattered.

22The sound of a report, “Behold! It is coming, and a great earthquake from the land of the north,

to appoint the cities of Judah a ruin, a dwelling place of jackals.”

23I know, Yahweh, that of a man is not his way, and not to a man is walking and establishing his steps.

24Discipline me, Yahweh, surely with justice, not in your anger lest you would diminish me.

25Pour out your fury on the nations that do not know you and on the families that do not call on your name,

for they have consumed Jacob and consumed him and they destroy him and desolated his pasture.
