The Book of Jeremiah 9

9If only my head was water, and my eyes were a fountain of tears,

and I will weep day and night, the slain of the daughter of my people.

2Who will give me a lodging place of travelers in the desert, and I would leave my people and walk away from them.

For all of them are adulterers, a company of ones dealing treacherously!

3“They tread on their deceitful bow with their tongues,

and not of faithfulness do they grow strong in the land.

For from wicked thing to wicked thing they go, and they do not know me—the declaration of Yahweh.”

4Let each one guard against his neighbor and do not trust in any brother.

For every brother, being a deceiver, deceives, and every neighbor walks in slander.

5And each one will deceive against his neighbor and they will not speak the truth.

They teach their tongue to speak deceitful things. Committing iniquity, they become weary.

6Your dwelling is in the midst of deceit, in deceit they refuse to know me—the declaration of Yahweh.”

7Therefore, thus says Yahweh of hosts, “Behold, I am refining them and will test them,

for how shall I act from before the face of the daughter of my people?

8Their tongue is a murderous arrow, it speaks a deceitful thing.

With his mouth he speaks peace with their neighbors, and in his midst he sets his ambush.

9Shall I not visit against them because of these things—the declaration of Yahweh—

shall I not avenge my life against a nation that is like this?

10upon the mountains I will raise up weeping and lamentation, and upon the pastures of the wilderness a funeral song,

for they are burned from no man passing through. They do not hear the sound of cattle,

from the birds of the heavens until the animals, they have fled and gone away.

11And I will appoint Jerusalem for piles of ruins, a dwelling-place of jackals,

and I will make the cities of Judah a ruin without dwellers.”

12Who is the man that is wise and he understands this? And whom has the mouth of Yahweh spoken to him, and he will declare it?

Because of what has the land perished and been destroyed like the wilderness from no man passing through?

13And Yahweh said, “Because of their abandoning my law that I set before the face of them, and they do not listen to my voice and they do not walk by it. 14And they walked after their stubborn hearts and after the Baals, which fathers taught them. 15Therefore thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Behold, I am feeding them, this people wormwood and making them drink water of poison. 16And I will scatter them among the nations that they have not known, they and their fathers, and I will send out a sword after them until my destroying them.’”

17Thus says Yahweh of hosts, “Think about this,

and call funeral singers and let them come, and send out to the skilled ones and let them come.

18Let them hurry and lift up a lament over us,

and our eyes have melted with tears, and our eyelids flow with water.

19For the sound of lamentation is heard from Zion, ‘How we are devastated.

We are greatly ashamed, for we have abandoned the land because they tore down our dwellings.’

20Now hear Yahweh’s word, women, let your ear receive the word of his mouth,

and teach your daughters a lamentation and each woman, her neighbor a funeral song.

21For death has come up into our windows, it enters into our palaces,

cutting off children from outside, and young men from the open places.

22Speak ’thus is the declaration of Yahweh—the corpse of a man will fall like dung upon the face of the ground,

and like fallen grain after the reapers, and there is no one to gather them.’”

23Thus says Yahweh, “Do not let the wise one boast on account of his wisdom,

and do not let the warrior boast on account of his strength. Do not let the rich one boast on account of his riches.

24For if in this let the boaster boast, understanding and knowing me,

for I am Yahweh, doing covenant faithfulness, justice and righteousness on the earth. For in these I take pleasure—the declaration of Yahweh.”

25“Behold, days are coming—the declaration of Yahweh—and I will visit against all of the circumcised in the foreskin, 26against Egypt and against Judah, and against Edom and against the sons of Ammon, and against Moab and against all of those cutting a corner, those dwelling in the desert, for all of the uncircumcised nations and all of the house of Israel has an uncircumcised heart.”
