ἀγρυπνία

Strong’s: G70

Associated OET lemmas: ἀγρυπνία

Form 1

Part of speech: noun, f.

Inflections: ἀγρυπνία; -ας

Constructions: ἀγρυπνία; ἀγρεύω; ὕπνος

Sense 1: sleeplessness

Semantic entry: 23.73

Semantic domains: Physiological Processes and States

Subdomains: Sleep, Waking

Definition: the state of remaining awake because of not being able to go to sleep, whether from anxiety or because of external circumstances

Notes: In the two occurrences of ἀγρυπνία in the NT (RV CO2 6:5 · RV CO2 11:27 · LV CO2 6:5 · LV CO2 11:27 · Read together CO2 6:5 · Read together CO2 11:27), failure to sleep was evidently the result of external circumstances which prevented normal sleep. It may therefore be possible to translate ἀγρυπνία as it was not possible to sleep or there was no way to sleep.
