EAST WIND

Wind coming mostly in May, September, and October. This scorching wind, also called a sirocco, destroyed vegetation (Gn 41:6; Ez 17:10; Jon 4:8), withered flowers (Ps 103:15-16), and dried up fountains and springs (Hos 13:15). The Lord used an east wind to drive back the waters of the Red Sea for the Israelites to cross (Ex 14:21). The east wind also depicts God’s judgment (Is 27:8; Jer 4:11; 18:17). An east or northeast wind drove the apostle Paul’s ship off course (Acts 27:14, KJB “Euroclydon”). That wind, which is frequent in the western Mediterranean, is called a “levanter.”
