ναός

Strong’s: G3485

Associated OET lemmas: ναός

Notes: It would be possible to define ναός[a] temple, sanctuary (7.15: ναός) in such a way as to include both sanctuaries as well as replicas of such buildings, but in view of the widespread diminutive derivations in Greek and the clear distinctions which many languages make between originals and souvenir replicas, there seem to be both theoretical as well as practical reasons for this distinction between ναός[a] and ναός[b].

Form 1

Part of speech: noun, m.

Inflections: ναός; -οῦ

Related lemmas: νεωκόρος

Sense 1: temple, sanctuary

Semantic entry: 7.15

Semantic domains: Constructions

Subdomains: Buildings

Definition: a building in which a deity is worshiped (in the case of the Temple in Jerusalem, a place where God was also regarded as dwelling)

Notes: ναός[a] may often be rendered as ‘the house of God’ or ‘the place where God dwells’ or ‘God’s building.’ In some languages it is most naturally referred to as ‘the holy house’ or ‘the holy place.’ See also 7.16: ἱερός.|ναός is used figuratively in RV JHN 2:21 · LV JHN 2:21 · Read together JHN 2:21 (ἐκεῖνος δὲ ἔλεγεν περὶ τοῦ ναοῦ τοῦ σώματος αὐτοῦ ‘but he spoke of the temple of his body’ or ‘… of his body as a temple’) and in RV CO1 6:19 · LV CO1 6:19 · Read together CO1 6:19, where the believer’s body is spoken of as ναὸς τοῦ ἐν ὑμῖν ἁγίου πνεύματος ‘the temple of the Holy Spirit within you.’
