17:16 People of Athens like new ideas

16While Paul stayed in Athens waiting for them, he was upset in his spirit as he observed how idolatrous the people were. 17So while he stayed busy having discussions with the Jews and other worshippers from the meeting hall, he also spent time every day with anyone who just happened to be around in the marketplace. 18Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers enjoyed discussing things with him, but others just mocked him, “What does this babbler want to talk about now?”

But others said, “Seems that he’s talking about strange demons,” because he was preaching the good message about Yeshua and coming back to life. 19So they grabbed him and brought him to the Aries Hill where the council sat and asked, “Are we allowed to know what this new teaching that you’re bringing is about? 20It seems that you have some surprising ideas for our ears, so we want to hear what it’s all about.” 21(Everyone in Athens and even visitors often took the opportunity either to explain or to listen to any new things.)

22So Paul stood up in the middle of the gathering on the hill and spoke, “Men of Athens, I’ve noticed how you all are very religious, 23because as I was looking around and observing your objects of worship, I even discovered an altar that was inscribed, ‘To the unknown god.’ So without knowing it, you already worship this God that I’m going to tell you about. 24This God who created the earth and everything in it is the master of heaven and earth. He doesn’t live in man-made temples 25nor can he be repaired by any human hands and he doesn’t need to be fed. On the contrary, he’s the one who gives life and breath and who gives us everything that we need. 26From one man he made every nationality that lives across all the earth and designated their boundaries and their futures. 27He made them so that they would try to discover God, and if they did search for him they might find him as he’s not far from any one of us 28because

‘We live in him and are moved by him and exist through him.’

Even some of your own poets wrote,

‘We are all descended from just one.’

29So since we are God’s offspring, we shouldn’t be putting gold or silver or stone craftsmanship in the same class as the divine. 30In fact God overlooked times of such ignorance in the past, but now he’s informing everyone and requiring them to repent 31because he’s set a date for when he’s going to be fairly judging the world. He’s already appointed the judge who everyone can have faith in because he brought him back to life from the dead.

32When they heard about a dead person coming back to life, some started mocking but others said, “We’d like to hear more about this from you another time.” 33So Paul left at that stage 34but some people joined with him and believed, including Dionysius who was a council member, a woman named Damaris, and others as well.

16And the Paulos in the Athaʸnai, of_awaiting them, the spirit of_him was_being_provoked in him, of_observing the city being idolatrous.
17Therefore he_was_discussing on_one_hand in the synagogue with_the Youdaiōns, and the ones worshipping, and in the marketplace on every day with the ones happening_to_be.
18On_the_other_hand some also of_the Epikoureios and Stōikos philosophers were_conferring with_him, and some were_saying:
What wishfully might_ this - _be_wanting babbler to_be_saying?
But the others:
He_is_supposing to_be a_proclaimer of_strange demons, because he_was_good_message_preaching the Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) and the resurrection.
19and having_taken_hold of_him, they_brought him to the Areios Hill saying:
Are_we_being_able to_know what is the this new, teaching is which being_spoken by you?
20For/Because you_are_carrying_in some_ surprising _messages to the ears of_us.
Therefore we_are_wishing to_know what_all is_wanting these things to_be.
21(And all the_ones_from_Athaʸnai and the visiting strangers were_having_opportunity in not_one other thing, than to_be_telling something or to_be_hearing some newer thing.
)
22And Paulos having_been_stood in the_midst of_the Areios Hill was_saying:
Men, ones_from_Athaʸnai, I_am_perceiving in all things how more_superstitious you_all.
23For/Because passing_through and observing the objects_of_worship of_you_all, I_ even _found an_altar on which had_been_inscribed:
To_an_unknown god.
Therefore you_all_are_being_devout not_knowing which, this thing I am_proclaiming to_you_all.
24The god which having_made the earth and all the things in it, this one being master of_heaven and earth, is_dwelling neither in handmade temples, 25nor is_being_healed by human hands, additionally_needing of_anything, he giving life, and breath, and the_ all _things to_all, 26and he_made of one, every nation of_mankind to_be_dwelling on all the_face of_the earth, having_designated the having_been_commanded times and the boundaries of_the dwelling_place of_them, 27to_be_seeking the god, if perhaps surely they_might_grope for_him and might_find him, also surely being not far from one each of_us.
28For/Because we_are_living in him and are_being_moved and are, as also some of_the among you_all of_the_poets have_said:
For/Because we_are also of_the one descent.
29Therefore being descent of_ the _god, we_ought not to_be_thinking about_gold or silver or a_stone mark of_the_craft and thoughts of_human_origin, to_be similar the divine.
30Therefore indeed the god the times of_ the _ignorance having_overlooked, now he_is_reporting the things to_ all _the people everywhere to_be_repenting, 31as_much_as he_set a_day in which he_is_going to_be_judging the inhabited_world in righteousness, by a_man to_whom he_designated, having_brought_about faith to_all, having_raised_ him _up from the_dead.
32And having_heard about a_resurrection of_the_dead, on_one_hand they were_mocking, on_the_other_hand they said:
We_will_be_hearing from_you concerning this also again.
33Thus the Paulos came_out from the_midst of_them.
34But some men having_been_joined_together to_him, believed among whom both Dionusios the Areopagitaʸs, and a_woman by_the_name Damaris, and others with them.
