MIXED MARRIAGE*

Marriages between Jews and Gentiles. Marriages to the original inhabitants of Canaan were forbidden lest Israel become idolatrous (Dt 7:1-5; cf. 2 Cor 6:14). Nevertheless, this prohibition was often neglected in the period of the judges (Jgs 3:6) and thereafter (2 Sm 11:3; 1 Kgs 11:1-8). No explicit prohibition was given against marriages with other nationalities (Nm 12:1; Dt 23:7; Ru 1:4). After the exile, marriages to Gentiles were repudiated by Ezra and Nehemiah (Ezr 9:1-4; Neh 13:23-27).
