2 Samuel 10

10Now it came to pass after this, that the king of the Ammonites died and Hanun his son became king in his place. 2And David said, ‘I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash as his father showed kindness to me.’ So David sent by his servants to console with him concerning his father. But when David’s servants came to the land of the Ammonites, 3the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun their lord, ‘Do you suppose that David is honoring your father in sending comforters to you? Has not David sent his servants to you to search the city and to spy it out and to overthrow it?’ 4So Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, cut their robes in two, even to their hips, and sent them away. 5When David was informed , he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, ‘Stay at Jericho until your beards are grown and then return.’

6Now when the Ammonites saw that they had become odious to David, the Ammonites sent and hired the Arameans of Beth-rehob, and the Arameans of Zobah, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Maacah and of Ishtob with twelve thousand men. 7And when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all and the trained warriors. 8And the Ammonites came out, and drew up in battle-array at the entrance of the city. And the Arameans of Zobah and Rehob, and Ishtob and Maacah, were by themselves in the open country. 9But when Joab saw that he was being attacked both in front and in the rear, he selected the picked men of Israel, and put them in array against the Arameans. 10And the rest of the people he placed under the command of Abishai his brother; and he put them in array against the Ammonites. 11And he said, ‘If the Arameans should be too strong for me, then you shall help me, but if the Ammonites should be too strong for you, then I will come to your aid. 12Be courageous and let us know ourselves men for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God; and may Jehovah do that which seems good to him.’ 13Now when Joab and the people who were with him drew near for the battle against the Arameans, they fled before him. 14And when the Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, and entered into the city. Then Joab returned from the Ammonites, and came to Jerusalem.

15But when the Arameans saw that they had been defeated by the Israelites, they gathered themselves together, 16and sent, and brought out the Arameans who were beyond the River (Euphrates), and they came to Helam with Shobach, the commander of the army of Hadadezer, at their head. 17And when it was reported to David, he gathered all Israel together and crossed over the Jordan and came to Helam. And the Arameans set themselves in array against David and fought with him. 18And the Arameans fled before Israel; and David slew of the Arameans seven hundred and forty thousand and smote Shobach the commander of their army, so that he died there. 19And when all the kings who were subject to Hadadezer saw that they were defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel and were subject to them. So the Arameans feared to help the Ammonites any more.
