The Book of Isaiah 7

7And it happened, in the days of Ahaz son of Jotham son of Uzziah, king of Judah, Rezin the king of Aram, and Pekah son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up to Jerusalem to war against it, but they could not prevail against it. 2And it was reported to the house of David, saying, “Aram stands by with Ephraim,” and his heart trembled, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the forest shake before the face of the wind.

3And Yahweh said to Isaiah, “Go out, please, to meet Ahaz, you and your son Shear-Jashub, at the end of the channel of the upper pool, to the road of the field of the fuller. 4And say to him, ‘Be careful and calm, you shall not be afraid, and your heart shall not be soft from these two tails of smoldering firebrands, by the burning nose of Rezin and Aram, and the son of Remaliah. 5Because Aram, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah have planned evil against you, saying, 6“Let us go up against Judah and terrify her, and let us break into her and crown a king in her midst, the son of Tabeel.”’

7Thus the Lord Yahweh says,

It will not succeed, and it will not be,

8because the head of Aram is Damascus,

and the head of Damascus is Rezin.

And within 65 years,

Ephraim will be broken from being a people.

9And the head of Ephraim is Samaria,

and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah.

If you do not believe,

then you will not be secure.”

10And Yahweh continued to speak to Ahaz, saying, 11“Ask a sign for yourself from Yahweh your God; make the request deep, or make it high above.” 12And Ahaz said, “I shall not ask, and I shall not test Yahweh.”

13And he said, “Listen, please, house of David. Is it too little for you to tire out the people, that you also tire out my God? 14Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: Behold, the young woman will conceive and bear a son and will call his name Immanuel.[fn] 15He will eat curds and honey when he knows to refuse the evil and choose the good. 16For before the child knows to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land will be desolate, though you fear the faces of its two kings. 17Yahweh will bring the king of Assyria on you and on your people, and on the house of your father days that have not come since the day Ephraim turned away from Judah.”

18And it will happen on that day,

Yahweh will whistle for a fly

that is in the distant streams of Egypt,

and for a bee that is in the land of Assyria.

19And they will come and settle down, all of them,

in the valleys of desolation

and in the clefts of the rocks,

and in all the thornbushes, and in all the pastures.

20At that time the Lord will shave

with a razor the laborer beyond the river—

the king of Assyria—

the head and the hair of the legs,

and he will also scrape away the beard.

21And it will happen on that day,

a man will keep alive a young cow and two sheep.

22And it will happen, because of the abundance of milk produced,

he will eat curds,

for everyone left in the land

will eat curds and honey.

23And it will happen on that day,

there will be, in every place

where there were 1000 vines worth 1000 silvers,

it will be briers and thorns.

24One will go there with arrows and with bows,

because all the land will be briers and thorns.

25And all the hills that were cultivated with the hoe,

you will not go there for fear of the briers and thorns,

and it will be for sending out of cattle and for grazing of sheep.

Instead of the young woman some ancient manuscripts have a young woman.
