OET (OET-LV)And him having_come_in into a_house, the apprentices/followers of_him by themselves were_asking him, That We were_ not _able to_throw_ it _out?

OET (OET-RV) When Yeshua and his apprentices had gone into the house by themselves, they asked him, “How come we couldn’t drive it out?”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

εἰσελθόντος αὐτοῦ

/having/_come_in him

Mark is referring to Jesus to represent both Jesus and his disciples, who went with Jesus. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “he, along with his disciples, going”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / go

εἰσελθόντος

/having/_come_in

In a context such as this, your language might say “come” instead of gone. Alternate translation: “having come”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / quotations

κατ’ ἰδίαν ἐπηρώτων αὐτόν, ὅτι ἡμεῖς οὐκ ἠδυνήθημεν ἐκβαλεῖν αὐτό?

by themselves /were/_asking him ¬That we not /were/_able /to/_cast_out it

It may be more natural in your language to have an indirect quotation here. Alternate translation: “asked him privately why they were not able to cast it out.”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / exclusive

ἡμεῖς

we

By we, the speaker means himself and the rest of the disciples but not Jesus, so use the exclusive form of that word in your translation if your language marks that distinction.

Note 5 topic: writing-pronouns

αὐτό

it

The pronoun it refers to the demon which Jesus cast out of the boy. If it would be helpful in your language, you could refer to the demon more directly. Alternate translation: “the demon”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

9:14-29 This is the fourth and last exorcism in Mark (1:21-28; 5:1-20; 7:24-30). The disciples were unable to perform the exorcism, so Jesus performed it, emphasizing the necessity of faith (cp. 2:5; 5:34; 10:52). This is another example of Jesus’ great healing ability and of the disciples’ failure (8:32-33; 9:5-7).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and English gloss (7th line) are all thanks to the SR-GNT.
