OET (OET-LV)The_scroll of_the_birth of_Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) chosen_one/messiah, son of_Dawid/(Dāvid), son of_Abraʼam/(ʼAvərāhām):

OET (OET-RV) This is the genealogy of Yeshua (Grk: Yaysous) the messiah (Grk: Christ) the descendant of King David the descendant of Abraham (Grk: Abraam).

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

βίβλος γενέσεως

/the/_scroll ˱of˲_/the/_birth

Here, the phrase book of the genealogy could refer to: (1) just the list of Jesus’ ancestors that follows in 1:2–17. Alternate translation: “The book of the ancestry” (2) the list of Jesus’ ancestors as well as information about his birth and childhood (see 1:2–2:23). Alternate translation: “The book of the ancestors and birth”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

βίβλος γενέσεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ

/the/_scroll ˱of˲_/the/_birth ˱of˲_Jesus Christ

Here, Matthew is using the possessive form to describe a book that contains the genealogy that lists the ancestors of Jesus Christ. If this is not clear in your language, you could express the idea in another way. Alternate translation: “The book that contains the genealogy concerning Jesus Christ”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

βίβλος

/the/_scroll

Here, book represents a written record. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression from your language or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “The written record” or “The list”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

υἱοῦ Δαυεὶδ, υἱοῦ Ἀβραάμ

son son (Some words not found in SR-GNT: βίβλος γενέσεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ υἱοῦ Δαυὶδ υἱοῦ Ἀβραάμ)

Here Matthew is speaking of a male descendant as if he were a son. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “who is descended from David, who is descended from Abraham”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

υἱοῦ Ἀβραάμ

son son ˱of˲_Abraham

Here Matthew could mean: (1) that David is a son of Abraham. Alternate translation: “who was a son of Abraham” (2) that Jesus is a son of Abraham. Alternate translation: “and also son of Abraham”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

1:1–2:23 This account demonstrates that Jesus’ lineage and birth (ch 1), as well as the geography of his early years (ch 2), fulfilled Old Testament expectations, and that attempts to thwart God’s will do not succeed (2:1-15; see also 27:62-66).

1:1 The phrase a record of the ancestors introduces 1:1-17. A similar phrase is used in Genesis to introduce each section of that book.
• Jesus . . . David . . . Abraham: These names are repeated in reverse order in the genealogy, an example of a literary form known as chiasm (arrangement of elements in mirror-image). Being identified as a descendant of David introduces Jesus as Messiah (see Matt 12:23; 22:42-45), while the connection to Abraham emphasizes God’s covenant with Israel and the extension of that covenant to include all nations (see Matt 28:16-20; Gen 12:3).
