Notes

Published in 1901, the American Standard Version grew out of the American scholars’ participation in the English Revised Version project. The American committee continued its work after 1885, incorporating preferences previously printed in an appendix and making further improvements in wording and consistency. Distinctive choices include using ‘Jehovah’ for the divine name in the Old Testament and replacing a number of obsolete English expressions. The ASV later provided the basis for the Revised Standard Version and the New American Standard Bible. See the American revisers’ prefaces and historical overview.
