Notes

American dictionary-maker Noah Webster published this revision of the King James Bible in 1833. He wanted ordinary readers to understand passages whose vocabulary had become obsolete or changed meaning since 1611. His changes included updated words, grammatical corrections, and gentler expressions where he considered the older wording unsuitable for public reading. Webster deliberately retained the familiar style and general character of the King James text, consulting the original languages and other translations when making corrections. See Webster’s own preface at the Dunham Bible Museum.
