Notes

Julia Evelina Smith of Glastonbury, Connecticut, completed her translation in 1855 and published it at her own expense in 1876. Her work grew out of Bible study with her sisters and a desire to examine the Hebrew and Greek wording for themselves. She aimed to use the same English equivalent for each original word wherever possible, producing an unusually literal text with distinctive handling of verb forms. Smith, also active in the women’s suffrage movement, is recognised as the first woman to publish a complete English translation of the Bible. See Bridwell Library’s account and the translation’s history.
