William Tyndale wanted English readers to have the scriptures in their own language and translated the New Testament from Greek. Unable to obtain church support in England, he worked on the European mainland; his first complete printed New Testament appeared at Worms in 1526. Copies were smuggled into England, where the authorities condemned and burned them. Tyndale revised his translation in 1534 and also translated portions of the Old Testament from Hebrew before his arrest and execution for heresy in 1536.
