Notes

Robert Young, also known for his Analytical Concordance to the Bible, first published this translation in 1862. He sought to help readers study the Hebrew and Greek through closely literal English, preserving distinctions that he believed existing versions obscured. His emphasis on consistent word choices and his particular understanding of Hebrew verb forms produced much of the translation’s distinctive wording. Young issued a revised edition in 1887; the 1898 edition was a further revision published after his death, retaining his translation principles. See Young’s prefaces and the publishers’ note.
