Coverdale Bible (1535-1553).
Public Domain.
None required.
(coming).
Myles Coverdale, an English priest and reformer working abroad, produced the first complete printed Bible in English in 1535. He drew on Tyndale’s existing translations and on German and Latin Bibles to supply a complete English text. His work therefore brought together and revised several translations, rather than translating every book directly from Hebrew or Greek. Coverdale later prepared the Great Bible of 1539, which was intended to be available in parish churches. See Cambridge University Library’s account and UCL’s history of early printed Bibles.
