John Nelson Darby, a former Anglican clergyman and a leading figure in the Plymouth Brethren movement, produced a closely literal English New Testament for Bible study. First published in full in 1867, it used critical editions of the Greek text and included detailed notes on readings and translation choices. Darby also worked with colleagues on French and German Bible translations. After his death in 1882, his associates prepared an English Old Testament using that work, and the complete English Bible appeared in 1890. See the historical account of Darby’s translation.
